My neighbor and I clean old guns.....as a hobby. charge nothin unless it needs parts(or we recommend that they never be fired until a gunsmith checks them out)...a lady brought us a beautiful nickle S&W 32 long CTG 6 inch and it has the serial number 812xx on the butt. thing is goregeous and we wanted to be able to tell her when it was made....Anyone have the reference for that?

The reference is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. Available through Amazon and many other booksellers. I'm remote and mine is on my desk at home, but someone with immediate access to theirs should chime in at some point. If not I'll look it up when I get home tonight.

Pics of the gun in question are always good to help pin down a particular model.

You didn't give us much to go on, such as if it is a 5 shot or 6 shot revolver. I'm going to go ahead and guess that it is an I-FRAME 6-SHOT 32 HAND EJECTOR MODEL OF 1903, SECOND CHANGE. Serial range was 51127 to 95500. Made from 1906 to 1909. I would guess that your revolver was probably produced around 1908.

Without seeing pix or more descriptors I'd agree with Dutch Henry. His conclusion makes the most sense as I look at my copy of SCSW. Definitely would like to see a photo or two.

To the OP.... be careful when doing work on old guns, particularly old S&Ws and Colts. If the gun is not new in box, cleaning it up to look really nice can actually take away value. If you want the full story on the gun you can request a factory history letter. There is $50 fee for the letter service.
