    quick question about registering, (Handgunds)

What was the year that CA required handguns to be registered. I tried in the other forum and nobodys seems to care.

last year for handguns to not require registration is Dec.1990 or Jan 1991 IIRC

Depends on exactly what you mean.

The 'personal handgun importer' rule, where out of state folks have to register when moving here, took effect Jan 1 1998.

That's the ONLY law requiring non-assault-weapon handguns to be registered.

The DROS process sends handgun purchase information to Sacramento. That is functionally registration, and has been in effect for a long time.

But the requirement to transfer guns through a licensed FFL, thus starting the DROS, did not begin until Jan 1, 1991.

Handgun, and other transfers, could be person-to-person before that time. Any gun not transferred since then would not have been required to go through DROS, though it may have done so. There is no requirement that those guns be registered.

BTW, I read the forums top to bottom, so I didn't see the identical post in the Legal forum until just now.

That was posted at 12:10. This one was posted 12:21.

I know we're good, but is having to wait over 20 minutes really evidence that "nobodys seems to care" ?

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
