If your not going to chamber a round, at least leave the slide locked back, that way you will be sure to rack the slide.

Do people keep a bed side gun?

Originally posted by FlyingPenJust wondering if people keep within arms reach near their bed, a firearm, and if so, what? What's your reasons? Are you a LEO or Military? Do you live in a seedy neighborhood?
Yes, I keep a Sig P220 Loaded with 7 rds of 230g JHPs...theyre chambered too.
If anyone ever decides to violate my right to life by entering my home with vile intentions, then they will be dispatched with the full letter of the law.
I am military, but most of us have no pistol experience. I only qualify with the M9, but never carry one. So military is generally a moot point.
I live in a pretty nice neighborhood, although I had someone follow me around O side today, called the police but apparently there is nothing that can be done.Comment

Really,..... I mean,....Really?!?!?!? Where did you get this crap from? Some jerkweed liberal flyer entitled "Stop The Violence"?
WTF does CCW have to do with protecting your home?!?!?
So, when things go bump in the night, you are going to lock yourself in a room, possibly one without an escape, and call 911? Call 911 and wait for a police officer to arrive and save you?!?!? Save YOUR FAMILY?!?!? You are going to waste law enforcement man hours to come clear your house, of possibly nothing, because you heard a noise and are sitting in a closet somewhere? CORNERED??? While something could be happening to your child in another room?
Cops HAVE backup, I DON'T! I can, and WILL clear my house alone. Why, because I have done it countless times. Day and night. I know how to clear my house from every starting point in it. Its called training!!! Its one of the many things your tax dollars trained me to do, WELL. I guarantee that I can clear my house faster, safer, and more effectively than local law enforcement.
Are you more afraid of the court system than a possibly violent intruder? Really,...... Really?!?!? I would rather be judged by twelve, than carried by six! And I will definitely prefer to go to jail before I allow harm to come to my two year old son because I was COWERING in a corner with a phone.
And to another poster in this thread. Are you really going to clear your house with an un-chambered weapon? Really? Do you think that an intruder will give you an opportunity to rack your slide? When an intruder is hiding somewhere because he suddenly realizes that there is someone else awake and moving around in the house, and is waiting for the most opportune time to AMBUSH you, you are going to request a timeout to "rack" your slide? I really hope you are proficient in your one-handed pistol combat skills. I am. Can you rack your slide with one hand? I can. Proficiently? I can. Safety trade-off? Thats how accidents happen? The accident, will be to lose the ability to engage the intruder with wour weapon because your non-firing hand was busy fending him off. TRAINING, TRAINING, and more TRAINING. If after all that training, that is still how you feel, you have no business walking around with a loaded weapon anyway.
To the original poster, I apoligize for my rant in your thread. Having said that, I have two Sigs, both chambered, in a Gunvault Bio-metric safe by my bed. Index finger on a glass window for 1.7 seconds. No combination to remember and no way an intruder can get to it.Last edited by Parajeff71; 04-30-2010, 10:34 PM.Comment

Gunvault next to bed, Sig P228 inside, round chambered and extra mag. If I need to I get that and immediately check the hallway since I have 2 kids' rooms I need to protect. Wife can call the cops.-POLICESTATE,

The only thing "bed side" is my big
mag light. Current living situation doesn't permit a loaded gun to be unlocked and accessible. But you know for damn sure my case ain't far away. First thing i grab will be my 12 gauge though.
Keep it "Practi-Cool"

We all need to do what works for us but ANYTIME I pick up a gun the slide/bolt comes back. ANYTIME, ANYTIME, ANYTIME, ANYTIME, seriously. You NEEEEEEEED to know what condition you are in. If you make a habbit of it, the gun will be ready and so will you. Worst case scenario a round falls onto the floor, best case, that click turns into a bang. Yes I realize that 10th round could be the one you need, but I think the likelihood of you needing the first round trumps your needing the 10th. Again, just my $.02. Practice makes perfect, and you wouldn't believe how fast you can get that slide rockin and rolling once you've done it enough. To those of you who load a mag but do not rack the slide, I used to think that was the way to go until I did a tactical class and did simulation of being woken up in bed. I put my gun in the mag loaded but no round in the chamber, put it by me in the mock bed room, and " went to sleep" when threat was called out, I woke up , grabed the gun and off I went to clear the house. First " bad guy" I saw aimed the gun and heard the loudest sound in a gub fight "click". Under stress, but wide awake and less than 30 seconds after I loaded the gun with a mag and did not rack the slide, I failed to "wake up" and remeber to rack the slide.
So unless up have trained and practiced it a lot, I would not leave my gun in a state were it looks loaded but it is not expecting that you will remember to rack it when you have really just woken up.
Leave the mag out, or the slide locked back, or one in the chamber, but never the mag in with the slide dropped.
I'll probably get flamed for this. lolComment

I would tend to agree. I do this on any gun that is not mine, or that I haven't handled in a while. Though I could tell you every gun in my safe, whether it's loaded or not, and what it's loaded with, I still check for safety whenever I'm handling them.We all need to do what works for us but ANYTIME I pick up a gun the slide/bolt comes back. My bedside gun will be cocked and locked. I don't trust myself to wakeup at 4:15 am and remember to rack the slide. Or to have the strength. I've woken up some mornings and had my hands so stiff I couldn't barely put my shoes on, not worth the riskComment

I totally understand why you would condition one, I just don't trust myself to know the difference between the mossberg and the alarm clock some mornings. (kidding of course)I would tend to agree. Having it already chambered is just plain retarded, the intruder needs to hear you let that bolt slam, while he stands there in the still darkness quivering in fear."If men were angels, no government would be necessary." - James Madison, Federalist No. 51 (1787)Comment
