I have a registered assault handgun (threaded comp). Can I pin the comp. or remove the comp. And have it register as a regular pistol? Went to the DOJ web site but, can find the answer. Where would I find it on the DOJ web site?

if the assault weapon is not a named one you can remove the offending feature and unassaultregister it
i assume you currently have 2 registrations on it right? one pistol registration one assault weapon registration
hmm i wonder if they went around and confisacted all the assault pistols that are registered pistols

Why would you want to do that? you have the holy grail (registered AW). Assuming it's a 1911 pattern gun, you can put a mech-tech carbine conversion on it legally, or do any number of things regular mortals cannot do. I'd just enjoy it the way it is.
I wouldn't dream of de-registering any of my AWs.

? What part of the government having a list of the make & model of your firearms makes you consider it the holy grail? If I had something that was registered I wouldn't bother to unregister it, but I am certainly glad I don't have anything that's registered. Had I been old enough at the time of the ban I'd have sold or buried my guns before I registered them.
But yeah, +1 on the mech-tech. That's a blast right there.Comment

Senate Bill 23 Assault Weapon Characteristics
A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
Just curious, but does anybody make a flash suppressor or silencer for 1911 style handgun in CA? My thought was that ether those devices don't exist, or illegal to be sold in this state and therefore, that law is useless. Am I missing something?Comment

Silencers yeah, they're heavy and cumbersome, but they're out there. As to flash suppressors, yeah... I was laughing to myself just this evening at some guy that had a USP Tactical on the range and had a Smith Vortex on it. So there are .45 caliber flash suppressors out there. It looked a little odd, and I highly doubt this particular pistol was registered but it was none of my business so I didn't say anything.Comment

Can't you just replace the barrel with an inexpensive drop in unit (1911 right?) and leave it reg'd as an AW. Once AW status is given you simply swap barrels depending on what you want it to look like that day. It still has AW capabilities as it is a registered AW.
I, too, must ask.....why??Comment

Shootm....
You could indeed remove the threading from the bbl or replace the bbl with a nonthreaded one and then file for AW deregistration with DOJ.
However, please DON'T - that is legally UNNECCESARY: your pistol is (most likely) a "Category 3" AW (meaning it's not a 'named' AW, but an AW by feature).
Registered Category 3 AWs can have sufficient evil features removed to render them into non-AW status, even though they are reg'd as AWs. When rendered into non-AW configuration - even though reg'd as an AW - the gun can be treated like an ordinary non-AW firearm, and can be reassembled back into AW status at any time you choose to do so.
Don't de-reg your AW! We need to keep reg'd AWs on the books "so they know we're still there" and to incur admin overhead at DOJ. As the poster above wrote, you might have the (mechanical) option of mounting a MechTech carbine conversion unit if the gun were a Glock or 1911.
The legal support for this can be read (albeit a bit indirectly) from DOJ AW FAQ page. Other DOJ documents also support this, and witnesses can even quote Iggy saying that disassembled Walther P22s without threaded bbls weren't treated as AWs. This was also told to me verbally, with dozens of witnesses, by former DOJ FD Assistant Director/Deputy AG Tim Rieger, with director Randy Rossi looking on at a 2004 "Meet the DOJ" dinner in San Jose hosted by Golden State 2nd Amendment Council.Last edited by bwiese; 02-04-2008, 12:07 AM.

I'm pretty sure that law was aimed at tec-9's, mac-10's etc...Originally posted by halifaxHow about the next time a kid gets suspended/expelled for simply drawing a picture of a gun. I see a federal civil rights lawsuit against the school district for violation of 1st & 2nd amendments.

Who cares - what legal relevance does your statement even remotely have?
You think just because your Walther P22 or custom 1911 has a threaded bbl you're immune from the AW laws?
ANY semiauto pistol with detachable magazine and a threaded bbl is an AW in California, period.

PS- just because a pistol is not a regged AW doesn't mean they don't know you have it. *ANY* pistol you bought through a dealer or PPT in the last +- 15 years is on record with the DOJ- there is a process to send a letter to them asking for a copy of your DROS records.
You will also be surprised to see that pistols you have sold remain on your DROS records until you file another form to have them removed.
My whole thought process in 1999 was this- if registered, you can still take your AW out and enjoy it, if not registered, I send them to my uncle NOW. If it came to confiscation, I'd send the lot out of state ANYWAYS, and at least I can enjoy shooting them here, now
