    Handgun Safety Certificate

My HSC expired and I was wondering do I need this card when I go to the range? I thought the card was just used to purchase a handgun. Should I renew the card and have it with me all the time?

    Thanks

There are a variety of needs for an HSC but if you are using your handguns and shooting your handguns, you don't need an HSC card.

    For example, from the DOJ:

Is a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) required when a handgun is being loaned?

It depends on the specific circumstances. Generally, a person being loaned a handgun must have a current Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC). However, an HSC is not required when the loan does not exceed three days in duration and the person loaning the handgun is at all times within the presence of the person being loaned the handgun.

Because some ranges are private, it will be impossible to say you won't need a hsc. I'm general, however, one does not need a hsc to do anything except buy a handgun.

Just for info, what other needs would there be for an HSC?

As far as I know its only needed when you are purchasing or transferring a handgun in CA. Never needed mine at any range.

You don't need an hsc to carry. It's only to prove that you have completed basic handgun safety training when purchasing a handgun.

Other than that, it's a way for anti-gun legislators to give us a hard time.

Edited original post to give an example. One Calgunner mentioned a situation where the gunstore would not show a gun without an HSC. I don't know if some require it to rent a handgun. I thought there was something funny about the HSC for folks between 18 and 21.

I've never been asked for it unless I'm buying one.. Doubt you'll have any trouble to go to the range with out one.

my guess is the HSC requirement would only be used as an additional offense if you committed a crime with it
