I have avoided .40 S&W so far in my gun collection (but I shoot lots of 9mm and .45 ACP). I just got a M&P Shield - I could only find it in .40 but I bought it anyway. Haven't shot it yet but I am worried about harsh recoil on such a small gun since I am used to 9mm. What would be a "light recoiling" or "soft shooting" .40 S&W round (brand/weight) to try? Thx

Winchester white box 165s are pretty mild. I got some 155s I don't remember who made them but they were pretty mild too.NRA Endowment Life Member

If you reload no problem. I went and shot some WWB and forgot how snappy it can be after using my reloads for so long.Stupid people; They're breeding.

Atlanta Arms 40 Minor
For practice, order some Atlanta Arms & Ammo 40 MINOR (they also make a version that makes major power factor, so make sure you get the right one). That round is spec'd at 725 fps for a 180 grain bullet and feels very similar to a 9mm. You can order reloads or new ammo direct from them over the phone.Comment

I personally don't think the .40 is as snappy as some people make it out to be. I don't even think it is bad from a Glock 27.Comment

In my Glock 22, the 40 cal is very snappy. I don't enjoy shooting it very much and I use Tulammo which doesn't have the hottest load either.sigpicComment

More you shoot lesser the recoil it felt.Taiwan born, Chinese descent, red white and freaking blue America citizen.

thanks guys. like I said, it has been a while since I shot .40 but when I did it felt very snappy to me. And I was shooting a full size gun. The Shield is pretty small so I wasnt sure what to expect. I will grab a few brands and give it a try. Cheers!TheNekoComment

I have a taurus pt140 that is roughly the same size/weight as a shield and I was concerned about recoil when I got it, but it really isn't that bad at all. My 10 year old son has even ran a magazine through it with a little assistance from me. I've ran some reloads (I don't know the specs of them as they came with the gun) and I've also shot 50 rounds of the cheap federal 180gr FMJ l got at walmart. I agree with the above, get some cheap target loads and go to the range and see how it shoots.Comment

Don't be scared, It'll be ok!
I have the shield in .40 and it's not bad at all....or you can just give it to me and I'll dispose of it for you!!!California, love it or leave it....well after fifty years, sure am glad I left!Comment
