Springfield Mil-Spec or Colt MK IV Series 80?

I'm thinking about trading my AR-15 for another 1911, I no longer have the time to shoot the AR at the longer ranges because of a new job. I now want a basic 1911 that I can customize and work on. I'm later going to purchase a shotgun for home defense instead. Which 1911 would you choose for customization? I'm planning on adding a beavertail, match brushing, 10-8 front and rear sights, front strap serrations or checkering, magwell, and a 4 pound trigger job.

Are you doing the work or having a Gunsmith do it?

Gonna have a gunsmith do the work, possibly 1911doctor.com or John Harrison.

In that case you could go with either...

I see about the same number of nice custom 1911's built on the SA mil spec as Colt these days. Most gunsmiths would pefer to start with a 70 series setup for a trigger job, but the 80 can be changed over regardless.

Look into having ball cuts or a high power cut added to the front end...it gives the finished gun a very nice custom look that is hard to miss.

It is a fun project but you will end up spending some $$$.

Yeah I'm thinking of sending it to John if he's accepting work. It would be nice to get a 70 series but I cannot

I think $650 is maybe doable for what you have listed...barely. Figure closer to $800-$1000 and that may or may not include the refinish work.

I mean, you are adding a beaver tail right? Are you going to do that but not upgrade the hammer? And if you are upgrading the hammer and doing a trigger job you might as well upgrade the entire ignition setup...

              It's a slippery slope.

On the Springfield's I don't think they care about NM vs. N (or WW for that matter) serial numbers...

The Mil-Spec is the best platform to build on, period.

                    Highly doubtful.

As an alternative, I would consider SACS, Alchemy Custom and Benchmark Precision to name a few.

So if I had a Mil-Spec SA and a 70 series Colt, both in the same condition, what would make the SA a better option for the start of a custom build by a top gunsmith?

There's an article on that page worth reading.

On a side note, I believe that most Pistolsmith's have a personal calling card. While some are the proverbial Jack of all Trades, others are simply the best with regard to certain areas or aspects of customization. For instance, in my opinion, no one fits and seamlessly blends a grip safety better than Jeremy Reid or Bob Rodgers, no one fits and seamlessly blends a magwell better than Rob Schauland, no one does better machine-checking than SACS, and no one squares a trigger guard better than Richard Dettelhouser (to name a few).

                              The Colt.

You should have done a poll, then we could have yet another popularity contest on Calguns.
