Day at the range

Congrats on graduating and on the USP, I love mine.

So today me and my dad went to the range to see what kind of pistol I felt most comfortable shooting.

We went to a range in San Jose, took some guns, and rented a few from the range. I tried a CZ 75 B 9mm, a glock 22 in .40, a HK USP .45, and the coup de grace, my dad brought his .50 AE Desert Eagle.


I don't shoot handguns much so this was a fun new experience for me. You wouldn't believe the attention the desert eagle attracts when you fire it in an indoor range; it is ridiculously loud. The entire range literally stops what they're doing and comes over to check it out. I don't consider it a very practical weapon, but I had an absolute blast shooting it.

I ended up shooting the best groupings with the HK USP, I couldn't get a comfortable grip on the CZ, and the trigger safety on the glock 22 threw me off, though once I learned to compensate for it and not try to pull the trigger in one motion I shot pretty good with it.

The range has it's own gun shop, and so, for my college graduation present my dad bought me an HK USP, which I am now starting that long 10 day wait for.

Overall a great day of handgun shooting in california.

There's a bit of an inside joke at Reeds, that when someone shows up with 50AE or .500 that they just got off the tour bus, and will likely fire no more then 10 rounds before passing it on to their "friend". Most people quit shooting for two reasons. 1, the concussion of such rounds fired indoors is REALLY FRACKING ANNOYING to everyone else trying to practice shooting, and 2, because since it's believed the shooter just got off the bus, it's good to make sure you're not being muzzle swept or shot at by them.

Eh, I can see how it would be a purchase by people who don't know what they're doing, but my dad has been shooting for 40 odd + years now, has a class 3, and served in the army, and although I don't have a ton of pistol shooting experience, I've shot rifles extensively, so I don't think anyone was worried about our range conduct, if anything the people there seemed please to see the gun.

Also, there was someone else on the range firing a 12 gauge, so its not like there was no competition for loudest weapon on the range.

Reed's indoor range. I will definately plug them and say they were friendly and have some nifty stuff. No rifles on the range but they will let you shoot buckshot . They have a pretty nice selection of guns you can rent for shooting. Some of them are a bit beat up but I didn't experience a single malfunction so they obviously take good care of them. You have to use their ammo for rented guns, but you can use your own for your own guns. They also have a pretty wide selection of targets to choose from.


Their gun shop has a pretty good selection as well, I would definitely recommend it to you if you're shooting in the San Jose area.

PS. That place had stop 249 signs eeeeeverywhere inside it.

My thanks for the info, I will check them out. Wife and I used to go to Milpitas Target Masters, but this range sounded like a good place.

I don't know any other ranges around here that allow this unless it's part of a competition (which defeats the purpose of DEFENSIVE practice).

This is a huge perk, but some people get butthurt when told they must take the Stage 1 and 2 courses at Reed's to qualify.

I guess people don't realize what an awesome instructor Louis is... why anyone would decline an opportunity to train with him at all is beyond me.

One other detail with the holster lane is if you don't shoot there for a while (like 2-3 months) the staff there will check your draw stroke before allowing you back into the holster lane. I hadn't been there since Oct (I know, I know... ) so they had to run the quick check.

I was there on Wednesday. I wonder if it was your brass we were looking at. Girlfriend was curious on what size caliber it was so I picked one up and it turned out to be .50

Congrats on graduating and scoring a great pistol.
More important; make sure you spend a lot of time at the range and in the field with your Dad. As time goes by it gets harder to do, but you'll never regret it.

You got the 45, right? I have had a better experience w/ the 45 than the 9mm for the USP--don't have a 40 though.

Congratulations on your graduation and the awesome present! Can't go wrong with the USP. It's a great gun, definitely in the top 5 of guns I shoot well with. If I had saved a little more, it definitely would have been my first gun.

Congrats on the new H&K and graduating! Sounds like a great dad.

My buddy at my LGS carries a USP .45 and absolutely loves it. I shot it on Friday, great trigger and fun to shoot.
