Help! Gun values and sales advice needed

My father passed and left some guns that my mother wants me want to sell. How can I establish their value? Is there paperwork required for me or my mother to sell them as the "new" owner? I know there is a process and federal documents 4474(?) that must accompany the sale- but I want to know if one of us has to declare ourselves as the new owners prior to selling.

Three of the guns are Colt Pythons. One is blue, and two are chromed or nickled. They seem to be in fantastic condition. Is there a website I can use to establish their value?

    Thank you for your help.

Wow not sure how much without the pictures, but you should have no problem selling it. Colt python revolvers are very popular.

      Thank you.

We have a friend who has a general idea about the value of the other guns but he doesn't know anything about Colt Pythons. All he knows is that "they don't make them anymore" and doesn't have a source for accurate evaluation, so here I am.

Check out gunbroker.Create a account and check past sale of the weapons. The Pythons are big money depending on condition upwards of about 1500 or more. After you find out there worth I would sell them here in the for sale forum so you don't have to pay fees and it's good to keep the guns in the state of CA.You should keep one or two of your dads favorite guns just to pass on to your kids you won't regrett it.

You can do a free sign up on GunBroker.com .. Then do a search to see what those guns are selling for. On Gunbroker it is also possable to research past sales of that type gun . It has been awhile since I did that search, might have been in the "sellers tab?" cant remember......
You can also look on line and order a Current "Firearms Value" book , there are several good ones out there.
You might try here on Calguns first.... Just go to Private Firearms sales and use the search tab to find previuos listings.

I think those Pythons seell FAST and fetch a hefty price ! Good luck

post the list and I'll be happy to look up their values from several different sources. Please be as detailed as possible, including the serial # with maybe the last one or two digits removed.

older colt pythons are worth more than newer production, and the serial number will help narrow the manufacture date.

also state if you have the box and paperwork, as these can add significantly to the value.

Pythons are like a holy grail of hand guns now days. You won't have any trouble selling them unless you ask too much. The auction sites are good, our market place is one you can search and see what others are asking, condition is always a key factor (which is why people ask for pictures). Where are you? Would love to buy a python - particularly a blue one.

Why wouldn't you want your father's guns? I have all of my father's guns, and my grandfather's. I will pass them to my son when I die. At least keep one or two.

As others said, use gunbroker.com Your mother or you can take possession of rifles without any paperwork, but handguns require a letter sent by you or your mother (whoever takes possession) to the DOJ stating that you're the new owner, and must be sent within 30 days. Google this for details of what needs to be in the letter. These rules only apply to immediate family members (children or spouse of gun owner). If anyone else takes the firearms, you'll need to do a transfer using a FFL.

                  ^ this.

Don't bother looking at the current (open) listings. After you set up your account, do an 'advanced' search, and search on 'closed' listings with multiple bids (you can sort on the # of bids), then look at each one to find the (relative few) that actually SOLD... not the ones (the majority of them) that didn't actually sell because the bids did not reach the reserve price, and the gun was automatically re-listed again.

Post some pictures & some members with the knowledge should be able to help you determine the value.

Thanks to Everyone for your responses.

I'll try and get pictures up over the weekend. To the 'second' suggestion offered up by some gents that I should keep them as "heirlooms", there are a couple sentimental favorites that I won't part with, but the ones we'll sell don't fall into that category.

Thanks again for all the replies.

I would suggest that, for the Pythons, you post on the Colt Forum. LOTS of collectors and knowlegeble people who will tell you what they are worth. If you have the boxes/wrappings etc that came with them new, more money. Take detailed pictures and post them.Post serial numbers with the last two digits Xd out so they can establish date of manufacture. Pretty much all major makes have an appropriate forum look for one for your other non colts.Be patient!!
