    Help date a S&W 65-4

The gun is blued, chambered in .357 mag and the serial number is 4D87XXX. Does anyone know how to date or tell me anything about it? Thanks

Appears to be 1979 production. It's the fixed sight version of the Model 66 K-frame .357 revolver.
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

4D - 6D prefix range = 1979 as per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. But that does not compute to Model 65-4, as that dash was both introduced and superseded within 1988. I don't see anything (without my reading glasses) indicating any blackened or blued production of the 65.

A Model 65 should be an all stainless gun. If it's blued, it's almost certainly been refinished. If it's truly a blued gun, then it's a Model 13, but that serial number range also would not necessarily compute with a 13-4.

Do you have photos you can share?

Serial says 1979. Model says 1988. Finish says it's not a 65 unless it's been refinished. Quite odd. Looking forward to the pictures.

Did you look at the model number stamped on the frame? Or were you told it's a 65-4? Open the cylinder and look under the forcing cone area. Should be stamped.

The difference in the model 13 and model 65 is the finish, as far as I know. 13 is blued, 65 is stainless.

No one told me what it was, its my friend's gun. so we just looked at a bunch of S&W's and found it looked the most like the 65. No rear sight, its 357 and has the 4" barrel. I dint know about the model 13 until you guys brought it up, and it looks just like it, I just thought the 65 came in both stainless and blued. Maybe it is a 13? and yes theres numbers under the cylinder. ill snap some pics tomorrow and post them up.

Understood. I'm gonna throw a pretty solid guess that it's a model 13.

The 65 came from, essentially, the 13. Kind of like the 66 came from the 19. Same gun, just different material. The all stainless guns model number's always start with 6.

Model 13... came blue or nickle.

                    Model 65, stainless.

                      HOW TO DATE A S&W 65-4:

Take her to dinner and a movie, and be very very careful if you get invited back to her place!

                      Sorry, couldn't resist!

13-2 is a production variant, not "model 13 with 2" barrel". It was preceded by the 13-1 produced from 1974 to 1976 and superceded by the 13-3 in 1982.
