    Colt 1911a1 question HELP PLEASE!!

I have a family friend who wants to give me a 1945 Colt 1911 A1. Her father passed it on to her when he died over 50 years ago. How do i legally obtain this firearm? I am extatic that she feels I will appreciate it enough, however I am a law abider and want to do it the correct way.
Firearm is in original conditions with 0 modifications.
The firearm is so old it is not registered.
    Any thoughts?

Do you both reside in the same state (California?)
The gun is hers by inheritance. 50 years ago (in fact before 1/1/1991) transfer to her required no paperwork. It does not have to be registered for her to transfer it to you.

If you both live in CA, both of you go to a local gun shop and perform a private party transfer (PPT). Fees are $35. You fill out the paperwork to register it to you (she must be there also), you wait 10 days, and you go back and pick it up.

Not same state residents, then she can ship it to a local dealer for transfer to you.

It's really not complicated because it's 50 years or older; and therefore defined as a curio and relic (C&R) which is exempt from the CA roster.

BTW -- posting photos, when you get it would be great. we all get to enjoy the gift that way.
