    Hi-Point CF380 first pistol?

    Hello people,

I am new to these forums as well as pistol and gun ownership, I have fired a number of weapons none pistols. But have only decided to purchase my first firearm 2 years ago for my 21st birthday. I purchased a Mossberg 500 American home/field combo for home defense and possibly hunting, second weapon I have received was last year as a present it is a marlin .22LR tube fed with a couple of speed loaders. But for my first pistol, I am looking at a Hi-point CF380 and have done a good amount of research. Bout 2 months worth and being on a budget for the price it looks like a reliable well made ugly S.O.B and I am not going to fork out the extra $200-300 for a first pistol. If you reply on this I would expect you to own/owned one before judging something you have never shot.

Thank you for your time and any responses.

Even if you weren't on a budget, I'd highly recommend getting a .22lr handgun before getting a centerfire one. You'll be able to afford to shoot it a lot more and become a better shot while saving thousands of dollars on ammo! Also, don't worry so much about the price of a centerfire handgun, the price of feeding it is what you should worry about. As far as the .380 HP goes, I bought a used one on a whim and have yet to shoot it. But, for what I spend on a weeks worth of lunches at work, I figured it would be a cheap toy to fart around with and, it would give me an excuse to load some .380acp.

Hi Point isn't "garbage". It is a very inexpensive but reliable, clunky, bulky gun.

I am looking into getting into the gunsmith trade as well and want to get a reloading press so I can make my own ammo and not worry about cost as much. I ask you jesse if you own a Hi-Point or ever have? I thank you Cannoneer for your response and honest opinion. I don't want to purchase a gun I will be taking apart and mess it up putting it back together, I am paying $139 for it and for that price I feel comfortable losing it if I tinker around with it.

Again, get a .22lr for $300ish first. But, $139 isn't too much to loose. I've played hands of blackjack that were almost 6 times that much! Don't play a $200 hand unless you're willing to split then double down on both hands. Back to everyday living. A $300 .22lr and $100 worth of ammo will allow you to shoot about 2500 rounds for $400. A $139 .380 and $361 worth of .380 won't even get you have the trigger time. The .22 will be a far better investment!

BTW, where are you located? If you're close to me and you want to buy some ammo, we can meet somewhere and you can shoot my HP all you want. Oh, I can bring some .22s for you to shoot too.

East Bay area, This isn't going to be my last gun purchase. I have a 2 yr old kid and a 21 year old step daughter. Budget is whatever I can sneak out of my checks to buy stuff.

Hi Points have a lot of haters, but they seem to be rather reliable, if blocky and big. There are several good reviews as well as a torture test I remember seeing on YouTube where the beat the living hell out of a Hi Point C9 and it just kept going. You're going to get 2 general responses on this question.
            1. "I don't own one, never shot one, but they're crap."
            2. "I own one, it's ugly as hell, but it goes bang every time."

I've done a lot of research on the Hi Point C9, and while I don't yet own one I probably will pick one up at some point.
I would advise against getting any gun in .380 as your only pistol because .380 is very expensive compared to 9mm. I own guns in both calibers, and 9mm is about half the price. If you're set on a Hi Point consider the C9.

Hi-Points are great budget guns, and there is nothing wrong with buying one. But buy one later on down the road. Get a nice polymer 9mm for $500

Well if worst comes to worst I can always trade it to a buddy for something or the other. I am purchasing 2 1 for me and 1 for my bro shipped for $300. I can't seem to find ANY C9 in my area and online they are $200 a pop. Trust me I wanted a c9 I could have gotten 2 HP .40 SW but they aren't legal in Cali...............

sure why not, itt's not prety but they go bang every time and they are a great value. knock your socks off. I might go with a 9mm, 380 is a little light

Trust me i would prefer a more potent caliber and expensive pistol. After this in about a year I am getting an Assault rifle then after that I am aiming at a 1911.

Go to Reeds in Santa Clara or Target Master in Milpitas and rent a bunch of handguns. Find what you like and what works.

Bring a friend or one of your rifles, they wont rent if you are alone or don't have your own firearm with you.

That is only if the UN doesn't decide to f*ck our second amendment.

I don't know if you are willing to do the drive, but last time I was in The Outdoor Sportsman in Stockton they had them in stock. I really would look around a little more before going with the .380. The difference in ammo cost is so great that difference in the cost of the guns would be made up in just a couple of range sessions.

I think at this point the morons in control of Cali are much more of a threat than the morons at the UN.

You sound like you really really really want to ask someone who has a hipoin personally. Here's a forum dedicated to the hipoint, they can probably answer more specific questions you might have.

My suggestion is to try one out before you buy it. You might love it, or you might hate it. If you buy it and hate it, that sucks. Trading to a friend can be a pain too, because you have to go to an FFL, he has to do the HSC and pay DROS and fees (only $35, but you gotta pay it anyway).
