    22/45 Grip Conversion (San Diego)

I'm located in the San Diego area and looking to modify my older style(no grip panels) MKIII 22/45 to accept 1911 grips.

    Questions:

    1) Are there any Calguns members in San Diego County capable of/willing to modify a 22/45 to accept 1911 grip panels?

    2) Are there currently any armorers/companies that offer this modification?

    3) If you didn't answer either of the above.... Any suggestions?

Looking forward to my 22/45 actually fitting my hands, thanks guys!

I'm in the same boat. I just don't have the guts to shave down the grips, and put in grip bushings. And I hate how narrow the frame is.

then the sons of guns went and made this: P512MKIIIRP

I don't think it is on the list, but I have seem them in a CA shop before. it's hard to tell what is or isn't on the list because the model numbers not jive some times.
Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.

Kingshouse on rimfirecentral. I have no affiliation and have not used him.

Pachmayr 75/85 slip on grip would work, although I had to return my first one because it ripped during installation. A little heat action from a hairdryer or a heat gun can soften up the rubber and make it slip on easier. Hugue slip on grip works too, I read people put them on upside down though. There's always that kingshouse guy on rimfirecentral, he will sand your panel down and drill holes on your lower so you can actually put on 1911 grips, although I heard he is super slow and very bad at communication.
          The stuff that goes boom.

I tried a slip-on grip for mine and liked it. Biggest problem is it covers the take-down lever and you have to pry the grip off every time you want to disassemble for cleaning.

              People disassemble their MKIIIs?

The only reason I haven't bought a 22/45! I put Hogue Monogrips on everything I own. I came across a great deal on a stainless 22/45, but it had that damn grip frame! I have however seen some with removeable grips??? are the moulded grips only on the cheapest models?

I had mine modified by this guy:
                  Doug Stout
                  1-330-203-2350
The work was fantastic and 10 months later I'm still a happy camper! Doug did the grip modification (you supply the grip panels or he has some you can buy) and fits your grip panels, mag safety removal, trigger mod and bolt release mod all for around $80 at the time with 2 week turn around.
The great thing is that because the barrel and receiver is considered the firearm by the ATF you can send the frame regular mail after removing the barrel/receiver. Here are two photos of mine.

A good rifle build isn't cheap, but a bad one can be expensive!

Off topic question I was looking at a buyers guide today and saw the mark III AND 22/45 are different MSRP.. The features listed looked exactly the same what is the difference of the 2 and for the extra $100 to $300 price difference..

Shot a mark III years ago and a 22/45 not to long ago and thought it was just a different name for them.. Felt and looked exactly the same

It doesn't look like that hard a of a job. In fact, I'm going to attempt it tonight.

Just face both sides, tap and epoxy in the bushings. Plan on using a Hogue wrap around grip.

I don't understand how people have difficulty disassembling the pistol. Its a 5 minute job tops.

I don't think it's the dis-assembly that they have the problems with.

The Mark III has a metal lower while the 22/45 has a polymer lower. They also have different grip angles, but that's not what accounts for the price difference.

Sorry I am a little late to this thread. I just got an email that Kingshouse (Doug) is shipping my 22/45 lower back today. Once I get it I can take some pics for all. I also live in San Diego. I shoot at discount gun mart alot as its close to my house so you might get a chance to see it yourself if you want. I have not seen one bad review of Kingshouse work yet so I am excited to get it back.

I sent mine to him early last month so it was far more than a two week turnaround. In all fairness Doug did tell me that he was moving and getting married and to expect a delay so it wasn't a big deal or a surprise to me. I just thought I would let you know he is a little backlogged right now.
