    Sig Sauer P229 Caliber Conversion

I have a Sig P229 Enhanced Elite in 9mm. Can you convert the calibers on this by just swapping out the barrel and mag change? I know that .40 and .357 are interchangable but if I were to buy a P229 .40 or .357 or .45 barrel can I just drop that in and be good to go?

short answer no unless.... you get a new slide. I don't know if they are the same exact frame.

P229 isn't available in .45ACP. If you bought a .40 or .357, they are interchangeable with simple barrel swaps. However, if you want to go from 9mm to either .40 or .357 (or vice versa), you will need the entire slide/barrel assembly plus magazines.

the only way to go from 9 to 40 is to switch slides. I wanted to change slides on my 229r to the newer ones with front serrations and sig told me that the slides were custom fitted to each gun.

The external dimensions of the .40 and the .357Sig barrel are identical, and you can swap between those with just a barrel change. The magazines are also identical.

The P229's magazine well is not long enough for a .45ACP to fit so there is no reasonable way to convert it to .45ACP. If you want a .45ACP Sig then you want a P220, not a P229.

If you buy a 9mm the only way to get up to a .40 or .357Sig is to swap the slide.

The 9mm barrel has a thinner exterior dimensions then the .40 or .357Sig barrels so a .40 barrel will not physically fit through the hole in the front of the 9mm slide. Also, it isn't safe to make a .40 barrel thinner which is why nobody is selling one that does fit in the 9mm's slide.

If you buy a .40 or a .357Sig gun, you can get a "conversion" barrel from Bar-Sto that has the outer diameter of the .40/.357Sig barrels but the inner diameter of the 9mm barrel. You can not just use the normal factory 9mm barrel in the .40 gun because the gun will not properly lock closed when the slide is closed and bad things can happen if the slide is not locked and the gun fires...

The conversion barrels makes a 9mm barrel fit into the slide of a .40 gun in a safe way.

This will work "most of the time", but "some of the time" you may have issues due to the fact that the extractor (which again is the same between .40 and .357Sig) is different for 9mm. Some people get occasional (1 out of 100) failures to extract, some people have no trouble at all. The extractor being different is not a safety thing, so no worries there, just some of the time it might fail to extract and you'll get the slide jammed open on a partially ejected case.

If you depend your life on it and you plan to shoot 9mm, then I recommend getting the 9mm.

If it is a range gun where an occasional failure is not a problem, then the gun in .40 with the .357 barrel and a 9mm conversion barrel sounds like fun.

I just learned this for my self luckily I just bought two s&w .40 caliber guns.
My new S&W M&P 40c I purchased a drop in barrel from Storm Lake in 9mm. I also wanted the barrel to be black to match the gun so I paid a little more for a process called ISONITE QPQ process which is basically a salt bath makes the barrel Corrosion Resistance, Improved Durability of the barrel etc..
And I bought one for my Sig P226 40 s&w to a .357 Sig barrel, with this switch I can use my same magazines, but from my 40 to 9mm I need to buy 9mm magazines.
My next purchase will be a Glock G35 and I plan on getting a 6 port barrel for it in 9mm..

I have a P229 in .40 s&w and I'm able to shoot 9mm through mine just by switching to a bar-sto barrel. I even use the .40 magazines to shoot 9mm without any problems. YMMV

if you want to cover 9mm, 40, 357 with the same gun, you need to get a p229 40 or 357. I have 2 bar sto conversion barrels, both of them work fine, except not cheap, $260/ea for ported and 2-3 month waiting. you can buy a 357 sig factory barrel for about $100 less. so you get an idea.
