    Glock 34 shooters, your input?

I was at a gun shop yesterday and recognized the Glock 34 from Top Shot Season Three, although they were shooting the modded Salient Arms version. So what is the deal with the 34, is it really pretty much the same as the 17 but just with some features added?

I am quickly discovering that I like longer barreled handguns so the idea of the 34 is appealing to me. I will just be using it for plinking/taget and if I get good enough, possibly some competition but I am a long way from that.

If I was considering the 34, are there other guns I should also consider along with it? I own a Ruger SR 22, Ruger P95, a CZ75 SP-01 and an SA 1911-A1 Loaded, notice the lack of Glocks in my lineup?

I hear a lot of competition shooters use the 34. I have a 19 and I love it. If you're thinking about adding a 34 to your collection I say go for it

34 is probably the most common gun I see in production shooting.

Same as a 17, just a longer slide and barrel. It does come stock with the extended mag and slide stop lever and the lighter 3.5/4.5 pound trigger.

IIRC, the 34 is like a longer 17, but with a lighter trigger pull, target sights as standard, and a window cut in to the top of the slide.

I own both 17 and 34. Carry Glocks on and off duty. ( GEN3 and GEN4)

I like them both . 34 SEEMS to be a little more accurate, but not as comfortable to carry.

I am going to buy another GEN4 in 9mm , it will be a G17. Just like it. A lot.

I just sold a Gen4 17 to fund a similar 34. I find that I don't shoot the 34 as well and that it doesn't feel as good as the 17 with the slightly longer slide. I'm sorry I made the change.

Have at least four friends shooting the 34 in production. They all love them. Most guys who have a 34 seem to have at least a 17 or 19 as well. Glocks are like bunnies, they multiply.

Is the 34 available in Gen4 trim?

Cheap, reliable and accurate, what else do you need? I love my metal CZ and 1911 but I have no problem shooting a Tuperware pistol.

^^ Same boat here. Sold my Gen3 17 to fund an OD Gen3 34 for Production USPSA. Basically I didn't like it as much as the 17. The 34 felt slower out of the holster and bottom line my scores didn't improve. I came to realize for me that there was nothing the G34 could do that the G17 could not, but there are things the G17 can do that the G34 cannot (e.g., GSSF classification). I recently picked up another G17, a Gen4 in FDE. If limited to one, I would say get a G17 over the G34... However, if you're not limited to a single Glock, why not experiment for yourself?

Another reference point: As you know, the G34 is primarily marketed/targeted as a competition gun for IDPA/USPSA. However, the reality is that more competition shooters are choosing (or switching) to the G17 for competition. Source: Every year, at IDPA Nationals the competitors complete an equipment survey on the type of gun and other gear they use. The results are informative because it identifies the guns that are catching on and the guns that are in decline. Glock is the most common platform and while the G34 is still #1, the trend is definitely towards the G17. E.g.,

                          - In '09 there were 39 G17's and 71 G34's used
                          - In '10 there were 45 G17's and 68 G34's used
                          - In '11 there were 57 G17's and 62 G34's used

Notice the decline in the G34's usage and the increase in the G17's. The survey indicates that the G17 will overtake the G34 this year at the 2012 IDPA Nationals, Sept 19-22, in Oxford NC, and become the #1 choice of the top IDPA shooters.

I also agree with the above posters, but I actually found out the opposite way. I started with a G34, and sold it to fund a GEN 4 G17. I love my GEN 4 G17, and I have absolutely no regrets about selling the G34.

I love mine. It's my first gun and so far have put 4000 rds thru it. Not a single malfunction.
