So I just picked up my Glock 21sf and ive decided id like to polish it to bare metal. Do I just sand away on the finish? I've seen the "polished" slides, the ones with the almost mirror like finish and I'm not a fan. I'm looking for more of a brushed flat stainless look similar to the slide of my Sr9c. When its said and done id like the slide serations to be black with the slide itself brushed but would also like to keep the barrel black for a little contrast. Any ideas and suggestions? Thanks guys

Stainless steel is a different alloy. You can't just sand steel and 'uncover' stainless.
I'm not intimately familiar with Glocks or their after-market parts, but sounds like you want a stainless steel slide like these. You might also look into NP3 or Nickel-Boron (NiB-X, EXO, etc) type coatings for refinishing your current slide. Both of those have a somewhat similiar appearance to stainless steel. You could, theoretically send your slide off to have it stripped/bead-blasted to bare steel and refinished. Check out WMDGuns.com. I'm about to send an AR receiver off to have NiB-X coated.
Ultimately, it may end up being cheaper just buying a Glock that's already made the way you want it.Last edited by CBruce; 06-30-2012, 6:44 PM. -
Stainless steel is just the material... how it's coated/finished is another story. I am no expert, but I would think media blasting (with the correct media as to not ruin the metal itself) would yield a satin "raw" finish. Chemical stripping would leave a smooth yet "raw" finish. I would assume (I could be wrong) that no matter how you strip the slide you could lightly go over it with a very soft 6" wire wheel for that brushed look. I wouldn't sand anything, because sanding will also remove the metal itself more than the other 2 methods.Comment

The normal Glock slide is not stainless steel, so you have 3 options.
Have an outside vendor customize the weapon with a polish or coating. Buy a lonewolf stainless slide or have the slide machined down on a surface plate to bare metal.
Here are those three.
Robar first:
I built this GLOCK 19 from parts, including the lonewolf slide
These parts have been polished to bare metal
May the Bridges I burn light the way.

you can't make a Glock OEM slide stainless, you have to buy a stainless slide. or if you just want it to be shiny, not stainless, just dust blast it or polish it. Stainless is not a coating, or a finish, it's an alloy.
But, why do you think a stainless slide is any better than the Glock OEM? Stainless Lone Wolf on the right

I sanded mine 3 year ago. Still looks great. I wanted the brushed finish also.
Read what I did here...

^^^ that's what I'm looking for. Forgive me I was unaware of the metal that glock uses for their slides. Either way I just want to bring it to bare metal to give it a "polished" look I don't want a new slide or chromed slide. I think I'm going to have to copy you outlawComment

Well forgive me for not knowing each material every gun I own is made of. Can you name every material by name including polymer and the base metals? Doubt it.Comment
