    G34 vs. G17 vs. G19

So Shenanigun's recent adventures with a new Glock 19 and Apex's development of a remedy to the 9mm Glock ejection problems have me wondering whether I should try my luck with a new Glock 9mm. I have a Gen 2 G19 but I'd like to get another one as to stipple/grip reduce/generally abuse as the Gen 2 G19 was my father's. I'm interested in getting one to experiment with and if it's reliable then I'll use it for carry/home defense/general range use.

With future carry in mind I'm leaning towards a G19, however I'm not entirely sure that's the direction I want to go this time. I currently have a stable of M&Ps and while I can carry either the compact or full size 9s without trouble, I've come to appreciate the full size grip I can get on the M&P9s full size frame. On the other hand, having a more concealable gun is always a good thing, but not necessarily a requirement.

What are your thoughts regarding a G34 versus a G17 versus a G19 for carry and self defense use. I know that the G34 is a "competition gun" but I feel that ultimately it may be fine for carry. I will replace the adjustable sights and I would put in a lighter connector into any Glock I get anyway. I carry IWB so the extra length in the slide will be hidden although I'm not sure if it will be so long as to poke whatever it is I'm sitting on. If I'm going to carry a full size gun having extra sight radius seems attractive. There has to be a reason all the top competitors are using the long slide Glocks. The G17 seems like the middle ground in this comparison and I like how the G17s shoot. It seems like the G17 would be easier to draw and easier to transition between targets. I also like how the G19s shoot, but again, the only reason why it's not a sure choice is because I do tend to like a full size frame. I think they shoot well and are at the same time they are easy to cary. I guess what I'm wondering after all this rambling is whether or not there's enough of a difference between the G34 and the G17 to consider even going with the G34.

    Thanks for your help!

I own all three Glocks .

I REALLY like them all. Somehow the 17 just works best for me.

I like the size of the g34 but the extended slide release happens to be where I like to put my thumbs

If you want to conceal carry a G34, might as well carry a G17L

Ejection issues for the most part seem to be ironed out. My 3rd gen 17 was made in October 2011 and has no problems with erratic ejection so far in about 400-500 rounds *knock on wood*.

What about the 17 works best for you? I guess that's really what kind of information I'm interested in.

Sorry, I'm not interested in an Xdm. For various reasons, I don't like the design of the pistol.

I have all of them, G17L, G34, 3 G17's and a G19, plus many other Glocks. If you are only going to get one, and have no need for CCW, get the G34, if you CCW, get the G19 or a G17. Keep in mind the G17 frame supports all of these uppers: G34, G17L, G22, G35, G24, G31, so it is the most versatile. The G19 only interchanges with a G23 or G32. The top Glock shooters use the G34 most often, not the G17L. The G34 was designed for the USPSA Production and IDPA SSP box. Unless you shoot competition, you will not even know the difference in first shot times.

                G17L, G34, G17 (one of 3)

and for carry, a G19, notice the size comparison to a S&W 640 J Frame

Well, it's an unfair question, I have only been shooting Glocks competitively for 20 years (and carried Glocks for the same time), so I have figured out a couple of things about them, maybe three things, they are cheap, they are ugly, but they pretty much run forever! Oh, and nothing costs more than about $7 to replace... Someday, maybe, someday I will graduate to an STI Open Class gun, with all the buttons and levers and stuff.... Course it's worth about 10 Glocks by the time you buy mags,

You have a great question but there is no right answer. It is what ever you find comfortable and are accurate with.

With regular man sized hands the G19 is the great gun. It is the perfect middle ground between a long sight radius, large framed 17, 34 and a small 3 finger hold sub-compact 26.
Call me weird but I shoot my G26 as well as my G34. The G26 has not had a failure since I got it. It is not as comfortable as the G19 which is why I recommend the 19.

                        i own a G17 and a G34

id go with the glock 17 but as soon as i got mine i put the 3.5 trigger bar, extended mag and slide release on it. You cant go wrong with any glock tho. only reason i dont have a g19 is because my hand is too big for the frame.

You can always use an X-grip on a G17 mag to extend the grip length on the G19 or even a pearce mag extension to give you a little more grip length.

I run the x-grip and pearce and love the additional length it gives me on my G119.

I've owned all 3 and with how my new G19 shoots, I don't feel the advantage of the longer sight radius will matter for an all around handgun. Just a heads up, the modified Apex extractor functions correctly now. So I will be testing this weekend, to bad you couldn't join us.
