32 Long = 32 S&W Long?

Hey, all ...

I just took possession of a S&W revolver that simply says, "32 LONG CTG" on the barrel. Am I correct in my assuption that 32 Long = 32 S&W Long?

Yes. Your revolver can also fire .32 S&W.

There was also a .32 Long Colt, often called the “.32 Colt.”

yea there is so many 32 calibers people gave up on them

i got a 32 smith and wesson firing h&r it can also fire long but its not recommended

I have a H&R .32 (1958 gun) that the manual calls out .32 S&W!
The .32 H&R round I'm told is much hotter..

When I get around to reloading again I'll be trying 38 s&w in 9x19-23 dies and a 38/357 shell holder.

Ummm... I don't know how well that will work. The neck diameter on the 9x19 is a bit smaller than the .38 S&W. You might be able to Forest Gump your way through it, but new Lee dies are usually under $20. Why bother?

As for the original post, as the others have said, it is a .32 S&W Long. When S&W marked the caliber on their revolvers, and simply ended it with "ctg", they meant their version of the caliber. As the others have noted, there was a .32 Colt Long, but it was a slightly smaller diameter case. It would probably fit in a .32 S&W Long chamber and fire, but the cases would most likely burst. .32 S&W Longs would not likely fit in a .32 Colt Long gun with their larger case diameter.

To add to the confusion, Colt refused to mark their guns that were chambered in S&W cartridges with their competitor's name. So .38 S&W and .32 S&W Long became .38 New Police and .32 New Police respectively. They offered their own loadings with slightly different bullet shapes and weights, but other than that, they were identical.
