A trade question

Hey everyone, been lurking on Calguns for a while, but I finally decided to get into the conversation. I'm going to use my first post to ask a bit of advice.

I have a nice CMMG AR that I bought for $1300 a few years ago that I have honestly put probably 500 rounds through. I barely ever shoot it, I think it's been out of the house maybe 5 times in 2 years.

For the last few years, I've also wanted a decent 1911 (it would be my first 1911), but the money just isn't there. I'm considering listing my AR for trade for a good 1911 (I would love a Wiley Clapp but they don't seem to be easy to locate). When I have more cash available, I'll build my own AR for considerably cheaper.

I suppose my questions are as follows:

1) Does this seem like a viable option? I know the idea of "you'll regret it", that's not my concern here.

2) What kind of 1911's can I expect to be a fair trade for this?

What model is it, and what are some more specifics about the rifle? Is it really a $900 rifle that you bought in 2008/9 for $1,300?

Forgot to add the details, my apologies. The rifle:

CMMG Mod4-SA lower, DPMS 1/9 chrome lined upper. Railed gas block, standard carbine quad rail, Troy m4 flip up battle sights. Magpul MOE stock in FDE, Magpul pistol grip in FDE, svg vertical foregrip. Nothing major or anything.

You might be waiting a while for a decent trade to come along. Have you thought about an RIA tactical? People seem to like 'em.

I certainly wouldn't mind one. A friend of mine has one and it's a nice pistol. It's also the only trade offer I've gotten so far, so you're probably right there. I was looking more for a trade because I work on the one toy for another line of thinking. If I'm going to end up buying a pistol outright, I won't buy one at all. Unfortunately I'm stuck with that philosophy until I can justify the money I would spend, and I'm just not there yet. If I do end up buying one at some point, though, that's exactly what I will buy.

Based on what I've observed in the Calguns Market Place, it seems hard to move an AR. I can understand why. The platform is getting cheaper and better at the same time, as in your $ goes a longer way today vs years ago. I think people find a hard time buying used when there are so many good cheap new options.

I think the best thing to do is to just post it up in the market place and see what offers you get.

Too true. The whole market for these is changing. I remember when people thought buying a bravo company was insane due to the considerably lower prices but quality offerings. Seems the whole market has shifted that way.

If you decide to sell you might be able to get a better price if you part it out.

There's also waiting it out 'till it gets closer to the election, just in the chance that it becomes a sellers market again. I know that sucks for some potential buyers to hear, but its the rational thing to do as a seller investment wise.

I for one admit, I over paid and over traded for ARs, lowers and uppers, back during the last election frenzy too.

Buy your pistol now, and wait until October/November to sell the AR. It's about timing.
