The foam earplugs give the best protection. Get a size that seals your ear canal and stuff them in as far as you can where you can still get them out. If you want muffs also/instead (they're about 10Db less protection on average) try a few pair out and get whatever fits comfortably and seals around your ear. Different brands will feel better or worse to different people but for a comfortable fairly cheap pair I like the Howard Leights. An audiologist I spoke with told me that plugs do a little better with high frequency sounds, and muffs do better with lower frequency's, and with something as loud as guns wearing both is best.

I have 2 sets of the Caldwell low profile electronic earmuffs. They worked great for 6 months. Then the shot suppression stopped working. It now amplifies everything including the shot.

So I decided to go more expensive. I bought the Howard Leight low profile electronic earmuffs. Out of the box, they have no shot suppression whatsoever, despite their claims. They amplify everything including the shot.

So now I use Ryobi electronic earmuffs from Home Despot. They're working fine for now (1 month) and they're rechargeable. They aren't low profile, but at least they work. For a good cheekweld I have to pull the muff aside and use just my EP4. So it's not ideal. It's great for handguns.

I always use earmuffs along with foam earplugs, custom molded earplugs, or EP4's.

I'm about ready to drop monster bucks for a top-of-the-line low profile set so I can get a better cheekweld. I have no idea which one though. I just haven't had much luck with the cheaper stuff.

I just bought some ear muffs from the Snap-On truck. They are Blue Point brand, but usually its good quality stuff. I asked him if they where adjustable, since I have an awkwardly large head, so he ordered a set to find out. They came in today and they where, and fit me just fine, so I bought them. I ordered a few sets from Midway USA, and I struggled to keep them on my head. These fit much better, and are under $23 with tax.
