Finally had a chance to hit the range with it.
Reliability:
Fired 150 FMJ reloads and 100 JHP very hot reloads. Not one jam. 50 of those rounds were shot by my 10yo daughter. She weighs in at staggering 68lbs and this was her first time shooting a pistol and I was sure she would get some jams from limp wristing. NOPE! The M&P shot everything like a champ. Only issue was half the brass was ejecting up. I'll have to check out the extractor tonight when I clean it. Easy enough fix.
Shooting:
Some may know that I'm a big glock fan. Would sell my kidney before I sold my G17. That being said, Glock better watch out. What a fantastic pistol the M&P is to shoot. Muzzle rise is the lowest I have felt in any pistol design (not counting 22lr). My daughter actually preferred to shoot the M&P45 over my G17 and CZ-PCR because "it did not jump as much". The barrel stayed low and on target. Fast double-tap shots were very very easy. Faster than my G17 which I have over 30K practice rounds through. Don't tell my G17, but the M&P may be my new nightstand gun if it proves to feed my SD ammo.
Design:
Lets start with what I like about the pistol. The ergos are amazing and the option for different backstraps makes it even better. The controls are in the proper locations and easy to reach with one hand. What sets this double stack pistol apart from the rest of the 45's is its slim grip but sacrifices rounds. Still, 10rds of 45acp is very respectable and its not like we can own higher in Cali. The "fish scale" slide serrations are the best. They give a solid grip without cutting your skin.
Now to the bad. The trigger is awful. Spongy, long, creepy, and the mysterious reset point bugs the crap out of me. Hard as it is to believe, Glock makes a superior trigger system. Still waiting on Midway to send me my Apex parts. They seem to feel 2 weeks is not enough time for a small part to ship to my door. Anyway, i'm hoping Apex will fix this for me. The poor trigger was not inhibiting, I could shoot accurately just fine. It just feels wrong. The lack of reset is the worst for me. I want to hear and feel that click. I hear Apex is working on a RAM for the 45 but I'm not holding my breath. Spent some time this week looking into solving this and I have a few ideas. Going to make them and try it out. My last gripe is with the stupid mag and sear disconnect. S&W built a great pistol then the lawyers stepped in and added extra parts. I don't like "extra" small parts just floating around my guns. The smaller they are the easier they break. KISS. But, S&W redeemed itself by making these extra parts removable. The M&P can do what you want it to do safety wise.
In the end I'm very happy with it. It has some con's but those can be dealt with.
