It's not on CA roster yet, so most dealers won't have one. Should be on the roster later this month. However, these are selling as fast as S&W can make them. I checked with dealers in MI, NC & GA, and all sold out...

I could be wrong, and someone will chime in with better info, I'm sure.Comment

Nope. The roster only applies to transfers. Luckily the legislature hasn't regulated gun fondling! A good shop will humor you and let you look at the off roster guns.Comment

Ya i hear a lot of shops wont do it. I think i can manage an sse and might just pick one up. I wanted to fondle first, but i guess worst case i should have no problem selling it if it does not work out for me.Comment

Call around to the SSE friendly shops and see if they have them. Don't know what SSE is? Click on the California handguns link near the top of the page and it will be a sticky on the top of the page that you are taken to. It will explain SSE in detail and even list a few SSE friendly dealers.
SSE is a way of legally buying off-roster guns directly from an FFL. Nothing fishy about it. It's how you transfer an AR or AK pistol in California and is now being applied to regular off roster pistols. It has always been there for FFLs to use the entire time, and makes all the panic and hubbub about the roster and LEOs selling non-LEOs off-roster guns seem very silly. Many FFLs (and liberal politicians) are just not aware of it.
Some SSE friendly dealers charge a fee for this service, many do not. So ask whether or not they do so you can compare your options. Also find out what their fees are for receving items through the mail that you order online. Some charge huge fees, some charge small fees. That way if you find a good deal online you can get one that way, and then have the dealer installer their SSE kit on it and be good to go.
Or you could just wait for them to make the roster.Comment

Ya i found a shop that will do everything for 125 out the door. is that a high price? these guys have really good prices so i figured it was good. I think the gun is way to small for me, but I am thinking for the wife. She wants something small that does not intimidate her...and lets face it...something more "small and cute".Comment

any gun shop in OC that has it..I'd love to cop a feel of it.
I'm so impatient for this gun that I am strongly considering SSE it.Comment

Perhaps, I was thinking of the "assault weapon" classification. I was at rifle gear some months ago, and one of the sales guys brought some kind of AR-looking thing out from the back to show a customer, but he wouldn't let him touch it because they had yet to install the bullet button.Comment

My FFL charges me $65 to DROS anything he receives for me in the mail. The other guys in town charge $25.
He doesn't do SSE however, as he doesn't have the parts.
Other shops in the area do SSE for free, or so they told me 6 months ago when I last asked...but they keep the conversion kits.Comment

ya i was told it included the DROS fee and then the cost of renting parts for the SSE. I think I am going to hold off. It might not be a good fit for the wife she has long fingers, might just go with another full size for her. Incase anyone is wondering you can PM me and i will tell you who is doing the SSE for me. Simple emails to shops will get you the answer though.Comment

I played with the Shield, I really like the gun because it is an M&P, but it's just too big for me, it seemed to be the exact same length and height as my M&P40C, it's just thinner, a LC9, PF9 or any of the Kahrs IMOP would be a better pick, especially a Kahr CW9, it's on the roster, readily available and less expensive and though I havent compared specs, I'm sure all of these other 9's are smaller and lighter.
I wish they would have down sized the Shield to maybe a LC9 or PM9's size.Comment
