What .45 ammo should I purchase for home defense?

Not all ammo marketed for home defense is good ammo. Try looking at this youtube channel and you can get an idea of how different ammo works.

Do a little research and decide for yourself. There are tons of internet ammo experts and you'll get tons of different answers on what is the best ammo to use.

Hornady Critical Defense

Hornady Critical Defense is what I use in my XD .45.

+2. My hk usp full size .45 loves these rounds... plus they have a plastic plug in the hollow point cavity to prevent the hollow point from filling up with thick clothing and seriously reduce the efficacy of a hollow point.

The plastic falls away and the round is seriously effective.

That being said, especially since you're shooting it out of a 1911, whatever ammo you go with make sure you run at LEAST 100 rounds through it without any problems before relying on it for defense.

Not to mention that even so called "experts" like dentist Dr. Roberts who's full of it and been proven flat wrong.
Also there's a good amount of biased reviews written on Soviet block ammo vs U.S and it clearly shows as such. The actual facts are in war zones & real events not in home cooked up gelatin test and personal biased opinions of some.

This is my view of effectiveness of terminal ballistics.

Being at the wrong place & time.
Shot placement (and #).
Willingness to live.
Time before (proper) medical treatment & quality of it.

With all that, I carry and prefer .45 but won't underestimate anything.

OP, any name brand .45 HP should be good, shorter the barrel then lighter bullet. I use any 165-185gr +P in my compact .45 (all copper HP's should be good).
