New Ruger Mk IV SS Target

Picked up a Ruger Mk IV Target recently. The first gun I ever bought was a blue Mk III with a target barrel and I still have it - wonderful gun.

    Web image:

    Now I've graduated to this:
    - Bull barrel
    - Mk IV = Easy takedown!
    - Better mag release
    - Added: Volquartzen accurizing kit
    - Added: Tandemkross Victory trigger (ie. flat)
    - Added: StonerCNC kydex grips
    - Added: Dead Air Mask HD

    Nice!

I’ve always wanted a bull barrel Ruger. My buddy’s dad got him a Mk1 bull barrel when he was 13 back in the 70s. Another friend had a stainless Mk2 bull barrel in the 80s.

I already have a MK1 standard, and a Pre-mark standard so I don’t need one, but I still want one.

Hmm. Not sure why the pics of the SS are now showing up. They're on imgur FWIW.

Their server says : ""Imgur is temporarily over capacity. Please try again later."

I'm not a fan of Stainless pistols but that MK IV with the black silencer looks amazing, nice combo.

Did it come threaded? I thought the only Mk series threaded was the space gun looking lightweight, although I haven't looked at them in a long time. I like it!

IMG_2173.jpg My favorite variant so far has been the KMK678, a stainless MKII variant with a 6 7/8” target barrel. Years ago I purchased that simple Hammer Strut, that makes the reassembly process very easy. That pistol has had many thousands of rounds through it over the years, and makes a great tool for introducing new shooters to handguns. Thankfully, from the factory it did not come with the idiotic magazine safety.
Our MKIII & MKIV examples shoot well, and have had the magazine safety removed. The MKIV has a trigger upgrade, and works well.
I do prefer the steel grip frames of the prior variations though. The extra weight helps to steady the pistol.

Splithoof, I've a KMK678 MKII as well. Love shooting it but didn't like dissembling it for cleaning. Does the replacement hammer strut make that chore easier and if so can you provide a link to it. Thanks.

                Sure, here it is:
HSS hammer strut support is a parts upgrade that improves the ease of assembly for Ruger mk I, II, and III pistols.

                    Soapbox time:
I only wish I came up with the idea and production. It is a very simple, small piece that remains in the gun, with NO permanent modification, and is totally invisible. Does NOT change or impair proper function. It is yet another example of design principle philosophy that Ruger could be more consumer friendly about, and I’m surprised that Ruger doesn't sell the part themselves as an accessory, like they have done with the BX-1 trigger assembly for the 10/22 series. IMO, how they have jerked off the consumer with crap, and sell a “improvement” is all too typical of American firearms manufacturing these days.
I still really like the pistols though.
                    End rant.

So before I came back I bought every permutation of the III's that were not threaded in anticipation my kids would have something to shoot when they grow up.

Then what goes and happens...............the IV's get on the roster, are easier to take down, and basically ironically stuck me with harder to work on III's.

Thanks for the hammer strut fix, ordered one for my older Mk Target! I've seen the ads in the back pages of the NRA magazine for years but never bought one. Instead I'd just avoid cleaning the gun (ha ha!)

Anyway yes this newer Mk IV does come threaded. Takedown has been greatly improved, I'd say it's likely the easiest gun to disassemble on the entire planet. Only the AK is in the same class - push a button and it pops apart. Amazing! Plus having a normal thumb mag release is nice, never liked the grip heel release mechanism.

So I got my subsonic ammo, it's CCI 'Standard Velocity' at 1070fps. Out of this barrel it's likely well under 1000fps. When shooting my normal 'high velocity' 1250fps bulk ammo there's still a report. With the CCI this gun is whisper quiet, all you hear is the action. It's quieter than an airsoft. Click click click at the gun.... thup thup thup at the target.

Oh and to run the CCI reliably one must get this spring kit:

Use the weak spring to allow the bolt to cycle properly.

I like the MK IV enough to rank it as a must own 22lr.

I have the 5.5" Target model and wish the upper/barrel were lightweight, that would be perfect IMO!

IMG_2154.jpg Here is a MKIV with an Apex trigger installed.
The factory trigger on this pistol was not nearly as good as the earlier versions, so this Apex unit solved that nicely. Now it is much, much better. While my son was changing it out, he also very easily removed the magazine safety; another useless impediment brought on by stupidity.
Now it is the best shooting example of all of the Ruger MK pistols we own.
