Handgun Legality Question....Plz Help

My buddy is in sales, Machining tools, so he calls on machine shops all over S.D. county.. A regular client of his a shop owner, Just lost (deseased) his best friend and room mate.... The room mate was a "gun nut" like most of us here, However the shop owner has "enheritated" all this guys guns. No other family members... he's got several old S&W's, 870, M1a1 etc. My buddie call me yesterday w/ all these guns for sale.......and cheap I want the three S&W wheel guns..... How would i go about legaly DROSing, registering, etc. etc. I want these bad but already have sevaeral legal guns and by no means want to risk breaking the law, and loosing my safe full of guns.... Please advise i want to buy these before the are gone to someone else....

I'm not an expert but since this seems pretty clean, I went on the DOJ site when I bought mine and pulled down a form called firearms ownership record- it's $19 bucks instead of what the dealers are charging now- I hear Turners is over a Hundred bucks now for a transfer. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/
Now that I'm your best buddie- any more room for friends and family on the buy for any wheel guns??

Your friend will be able to sell them to you via PPT (Private Party Transfer) thru a licensed FFl (Gun Shop) who will charge you a fee of $35 per gun.

He will not however be able to sell them until they are legally his thru probate of the will etc.

Hi Donger- Please share with us the name of the FFL that will charge a fee of $35 for a transfer. There are none in Orange county that I know.

Actually every FFL should be charging $35 for a PPT. A PPT is when both parties of the transaction walk into the FFL together for the transfer, and they must both be CA residents.

Firearms dealers are required to process private party transfers upon request. Firearms dealers may charge a fee not to exceed $10 per firearm for conducting a private party transfer. Example:

For a private party transfer involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00 for the first handgun and $31.00 for each additional handgun involved in the same transaction.
For private party transfers involving one or more long guns, or a private party transfer involving one handgun, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $35.00. The dealer may charge an additional dealer-service fee of$10.00 per each additional firearm transferred.
(PC section 12072(d))

YOu may be thinking of a dealer transfer where you buy something from another party and they ship the firearm to the dealer. In that case, it is not a PPT, and the dealer can change whatever they want.

Frankly, I'm not sure the shop owner can 'inherit' non-Rostered handguns.

The 12078(c) PC exemption referred to by 12132PC Rostering exemption is just for direct-line family members.

PPTs are allowed between CA residents that are alive.
