I love my S&W Airlight 340PD yes it is pricey but does it all.

S&W has several models that fit your needs. You mentioned only 2. S&W and Ruger would be my choices.
Taurus and Charter Arms are much lower quality. IMHO, the sacrifices are not worth the cost savings.

+1 for the 340PD! You forget you are armed real quick. 12oz., 5 shot .357 if you can handle it. Check around. I got lucky and paid $500.00 for mine. Older guy bought it, took to the range and fired 5 rounds through it and brought it back to the gun shop to be sold. I was at the right place at the right time. Remember I warned you about firing full house .357 in it, it's brutal. 38+P not so bad, .38 is fine.

Add a Wilson Combat spring kit, a bit of stoning, and a set of crimson traces.

"The S&W 642 has a big exposed hammer, and Bodyguard is DA only."

Hmm...you have the model numbers mixed up.

442 / 642 have the hammer completely inside the frame and are DAO.

The Bodyguard 638 is the one with the shrouded hammer and is DA /SA...later ones are rated for +P, earlier ones (1960's production and later) are not rated for +P but will be fine.

For +P+ you have to go with the pricey .357 chambered Smiths...there is no .38 Special gun sold, marked or rated as OK for +P+ that I know of.

I searched for the same thing a while back, and ended up getting the S&W 442 Airweight.
It shoots .38 sp +p, no hammer to snag on anything and fits perfect in a pocket.
It's DA only, but that's just a training issue. I have found it to be surprisingly accurate.

If you want a really lightweight one, they make a scandium framed one too, but they're pricey. A friend has one, and it feels like it weighs about the same fully loaded as mine does empty.

It was between that and the Ruger LCR, and the S&W won due to smaller size.
