    1911 magazine question...

Are all 1911 mags compatible with all 1911s?

    Colt
    Sig
    Kimber
    SA

Whats a good brand to look at when looking for mags? Or is it best to stay with factory mags?

Dimensionally, yes. You can use full size mags in an officer size frame but it will stick out of the bottom. Obviously you cannot use an officers size mag in a full size 1911 because it will be too short. Assuming you are talking about single-stack, 45acp 1911s.

Chip McCormick, Wilson Combat, and Tripp are the top brands and most people use them. They all use wadcutter style feedlips which largely disallows controlled-round feed that the 1911 originally calls for.

I just ordered a few 7round mags with hybrid lips from Checkmate which is supposed to be a lot better, we'll see.

I only use Wilson Combat 47D 8 round mags in my 1911's. They have been flawless and reliable for me.

Tried Wilson but in my 45 the Chip were just as good for less money. In my 9 the Tripp are flawless. Try a few different types and see what works best.

Tripp Research Cobra magazines work flawlessly. In the case of Wilson ETM magazines, they simply would not work under any circumstances. On the older 500 series magazines, the feed lip was making contact with the ejector on some Springfield and Kimber models, and those magazines are still floating around on the market.

Also, not being able to insert a magazine with the action closed seems to be a common issue with Wilson ETM magazines that I experienced as well.

It seems like every 1911 is different. For example I have a SA Loaded that does not like Wilson 47D mags when loaded to capacity (won't feed the first round). My co-worker has the exact same gun and he has no problems with my mags.

The best thing you can do is buy (or better yet borrow) one mag and test it out. If it works in your gun, buy more.

For what its worth, I have had the best results in my SA Loaded using the SA factory mags that have been upgraded with Trip Super7 rebuild kits (follower and spring).
