I've a friend that is having a problem with his elderly P226. As I understand it is the gun will reset when he drops the hammer on an empty chamber but when he fires a live round nada afterward, no reset. He says he cleaned it up and no joy. I'm having a problem visualizing this but that's the way I understand it.

P226 problem.

I bet some spring or something broke, probably a simple fix if someone opens it up. If he is up to it, he can look on youtube for videos on disassembly, like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWj1mk3IaFYWhere the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty.

What do you mean by "reset?" Does the slide not recoil back after a round is fired?
1. Check trigger bar spring. I had one break and rendered the gun inoperable. It being an "elderly" P226, the spring is probably the older bar type rather than coil. Those will break.
2. Check hammer return spring. I had one break but did not affect the gun too much. It still worked, just the hammer might not return to the normal position after the shot.
3. Did he remove/replace the hammer strut/spring? It is very easy to install it incorrectly and cause "reset" problem.
Trigger bar spring is very easy to replace. Hammer return spring is not easy to replace.Comment

Thanks guys, he's located in the Lodi/Stockton area. I'm thinking that the 'reset' is the trigger bar spring or the sear (if so equipped). I forgot about YT, and the suggestions brought up so I'll forward those to him about having a 'smith give it a look.Comment

Thanks, I was thinking it may be the hammer reset spring but couldn't be sure. I'll pass the suggestions along.Comment

this happened to me once while at the range. it was working find for many rounds and then suddenly the trigger is not resetting. i bring tools with me when shooting so i removed the right side grip and found out the trigger spring bar got undone. i guessed it got bumped when i replaced it with new grips.Last edited by Barang; 10-04-2025, 6:42 PM.👍 1Comment

He could send it back to Sig. They have a lifetime guarantee and you don’t need to be the original owner.RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.👍 1Comment
