    Picking up first handgun..

    soon.

Problem is. I drive a pickup. I don't have a trunk, and the box it comes in does not have an external lock.

First question. I already know the wise answer but i'll pose it anyway:

Will it be ok to drive from retailer to home (30min) directly with the pistol in its own factory packaging (not lockable) that it came in? Second part. Would putting the cable lock thru it be more acceptable in the eyes of the law?

Keep in mind this would be the only time, and I wouldn't be making any stops short of LEO intervention, and would have paperwork proving that I purchased the gun and the pick-up date.

This is if I don't find an acceptable bag or don't make it to a sporting goods store in the next few days.

Second.. Now the goods. What I really am after is a solution to the truck storage problem into the future.

I need some kind of bag (preferably soft) that is good enough for 1-2 pistols and mags and is lockable. I'm interested in what people who drive pickups are doing/using, and where they got it, how much they paid, and whether you like how it's worked out in your situation. I don't carry or anything, I just need something lockable so it's acceptable to the law, and small enough so it doesn't get in the way. I want something smaller and softer than an average-size briefcase. I'd rather not have one of those triangle-shaped, soft pistol cases with a toy lock.

i am sure the case has a handle to it. wrap the CA legal approved lock around the handle of the case a few times lock it. There you have it - a locked container.

Go pick up a lockable gun case, hard or soft, before you go pick it up.

I often lock my handguns in a range bag with a small pad lock, in their own compartment of the bag, and carry it in the back seat of my truck.

I usually use a backpack with a small pad lock on the zipper. legal and just looks like a backpack.

Any bag with lockable zippers will work. Buy a $2 tiny padlock from the drug store, hardware store, etc.

You will want some sort of case or bag in the future, too.
