Help Texas resident moving to CA

Im a GC holder as of the 14/4 (TX resident since Nov 2011) and one of the first things I wanted to do was buy myself some firearms as I am fed up of renting and not owning.

On 14/7 I will have been a permanent resident for 90 days and I can pick up my sig p226 (with 10rd mag), I was looking at buying a Glock (gen 4) 19 (with 10rd) and I really would like a Kriss sdp. I will be moving to CA full time around end of aug and of course want to import these. I understand as long as the handguns are not assault weapons I can import them regardless of the roster.

Firstly is the Kriss sdp classed as an assault weapon due to its characteristics, should I buy one that is ca compliant (bullet button and single shot etc).

Surely changing it to take out the single shot for a 10rd magazine is classed as "manufacturing", or am I wrong?

Also any other tips for me would be great.....

    Thanks

Bring STI frames! A lot of them!!! They cost a fortune here. Bring 20 frames if you can!

You don't have to single shot it. The Kriss is a pistol but, because the magazine is not inside of the pistol grip but elsewhere on the gun, it requires the magazine to be fixed. Fixed = not capable of being removed without a tool. So, a magazine lock such as a bullet button would fit this requirement. You can legally import it with a 10-round magazine(s) with no extra steps being necessary vs. your other handguns mentioned except for making sure it has a bullet button on it. No special process otherwise.

FYI single shot exemption only applies to CA residents purchasing handguns that are not on the roster of approved guns. The roster does not apply at all if you are moving into the state and registering handguns that you already own. The only things that do apply are laws like the assault weapons laws and banned features laws. For handguns, things that often need to be taken into consideration are threaded barrels (applies to semi-auto with removable mag), bullet buttons if the mag doesn't go in the grip and it's semi-auto, and magazines holding more than 10 rounds. You can disassemble any mags you already own that can hold more than 10 rounds and legally bring those parts into the state, but assembling them in the state would be a felony. Keep them if you want to keep them though just in case you leave the state to do some shooting or whatever.

Edit: P.S.... yes, check out the CA roster and think about buying anything now that you wont be able to easily get once inside CA. Note that short barrel shotguns here are completely banned so no Taurus Judge or the like. http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/ ...even inexpensive guns like Kel-Tec, S&W bodyguard .380, Diamondback, and some other "micro" self defense guns are hard to get here because they are not on the roster. If you decided you didn't like any off-roster guns you got and wanted to get rid of one, you would probably be able to easily sell it at a profit due to high demand and low supply in CA. High-end 1911 frames are always in demand, as hkdad mentioned. While we can do single shot exemptions for 1911's that we want, we cannot purchase just frames. So... always nice when they hit the market from somebody who moved in from out of state and decided not to complete their bare frame projects.

Why only the frame and not the entire pistol?

These need to be for your personal use. Keep in mind that buying a firearm for the purposes of selling it to somebody else is illegal. Buy a bunch of stuff that you think you will want but wont be able to easily get once you make the move. If you end up changing your mind and selling some things here and there, that's kosher. The guns/frames suggested are just ones that you will easily be able to sell if you didn't end up liking them or whatever... frames quite possibly being even better for the following reason:

Admittedly, my other post was a bit of a novel. It's in there at the end though: it's easy enough for a CA resident to do a single shot exemption for any 1911 desired. However, this cannot be done for a frame. The only way to purchase a bare frame is via PPT from an individual who already owns it in state.

If you happen to have a S&W 28-2 357 with a 4" barrel in your suit case I might be interested ...........Thanks.

If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

Before, you move here. Buy all the handguns that is on your wishlist that is not on the CA roster. I can't wait till I visit visit TX where I can purchase any guns I want (I'm a legal resident there).

Ha ha thanks that was my plan, I'm British and lived in NYC before TX so even 10rd mags and the CA roster is great improvement for me.... Plus the weather is pretty great.

I'm drawing up the wish list as we speak.... Anything else I should consider?

First, don't go. The weather is good, but not only do the gun laws suck (though they are much better thanks to the CGF legal team), but the state has so many problems it is mind boggling.

If you must go, as someone else mentioned, buy everything handgun wise you think you might want. Better to have it and not want it, than to want it and not be able to get it or have to pay a fortune to get it.
Starve the beast, move to a free state.
