In 1970, Smith and Wesson produced an odd little pocket pistol called the Model 61 or Escort, a five-shot .22 LR autoloader with the barrel beneath the slide, an action based on a turn-of-the-century pocket gun from Belgium. It didn’t sell very well, but S&W later used the same action on a series of full-size .22 target pistols, such as the 422 and 622 and two smaller pistols, the 2213 and 2214. I picked up a 2214 today and now have examples of all three. Despite their weirdness, all are quality guns that shoot well. My 422 is right up there with a Buck Mark, a Victory, a Ruger Mark 4 and other high quality target pistols. It uses the same mags as S&W’s iconic Model 41 and isn’t far off from being its equal in accuracy.
