What features are useful in a range bag?

OK, rather than rehash the "which is a good range bag" and getting the typical "Midway!" or "Dollar store!" responses, I'd like to know what makes a good range bag good, in your opinion.

I've realized that "not be a piece of crap" is my first criteria, as my piece of junk freebie bag's strap broke and left me lugging all my stuff around without a strap.

Is padding necessary?

Rigidity?

Dividers?

Pockets?

Mag pockets?

Large opening?

Lockable?


I've found I don't like bags that are "floppy" meaning that when you pick them up, they bend into a U-shape. A piece of masonite or rigid foam can probably make any cheap bag rigid. For mag pockets, I use the Midway Tactical pistol rug, which has pockets already.

So what's good in a bag beyond just being a friggen bag?

Just get a range bag, and not a gym bag or knock off cheapies. This is the most popular in competition.

For me smaller the better when it comes to pistol bag. Must carry two pistola with at least four mag pockets for each gun and a big pocket for ammo and tools. Lockable zippers.

I agree with the lockable zippers, but my range bag is much larger. Your idea about the adding something to make the base of the bag more rigid will work for the base, but the Shooter's Choice bags are rigid all around. This means that the sides don't collapse either, which helps finding stuff. The reason why I prefer a larger bags is because I usually carry everal guns. My fiance shoots with me most of the time, and I carry a back up gun when neccessary. I also keep sun block, hand soap, water, and a small first aid kit in there. I've also washed my bag a few times in the bathtub, mine tends to get pretty dirty.

Pockets are great. I recently got the Midway range bag and there are so many pockets, I can house 3-4 handguns, mags, muffs, stapler, masking tape, gloves, several boxes of ammo... It even has a built-in drawstring bag for spent brass, all with plenty of room to spare.
