My friend brought his son to the shooting range this weekend and they were going to shoot both handgun and rifles; however, he was told that the age limit to shoot a handgun was 14. Is that a CA state law or might it just be their "in-house rules"? I've been trying to search for the age limit both on this website as well as DOJ's website but have come up empty so far.

House rules.

Definitely range rules. Not a law.
I've seen Dads bring their toddlers to the range to shoot all sorts of .22lr's, pistols or otherwise. At that age, I think it's more a maturity thing rather than a hardset number. So long as they're able to respect the gun as a weapon, I think it's okay to bring them out.sigpicComment

Some indoor ranges require a height requirement for minors. They just don't want them to shoot under the bench.sigpicComment

That sucks. The Santee Discount Gun Mart here in San Diego let's me take my 5year old step son to shoot. Everyone was pleasantly surprised I was teaching him to shoot.Comment

My Dad taught me to shoot at the age of 4. He started taking me to the range. I was a big 4 year old though. He bought a Ruger Single Six for me to use. He would take me often. I was too short to shoot over the bench, so he would put a chair next to the bench, and I would stand on it, and he would stand behind me supporting the weight of the gun while I acquired the sight picture and pulled the trigger. Looking back I'm surprised the range staff didn't give him any problems, but I guess that things were slightly different back in 1989. I've never forgotten those trips to the range. I would agree it's definitely a maturity issue though. There are alternatives to the range. My dad bought a pellet gun and made a backstop in the living room (really it was a fisher price table). He would load the gun for me and I would shoot at a dart board. So the range isn't the only way to introduce a child to shooting. My wife is already trying to say that our future children won't be allowed to shoot until they are 7 or 8. I'm saying maturity is key.

Yup definitely range rules. I have been taking my son with me to all the ranges in the Bay Area since he was like 9 or 10. He is 12 now. He and I follow the rules and no one ever bats an eye when I have him shooting my 686. Except when they hear a loud BAND and look over and see the little asian boy with a smile on his face putting a few rounds center mass.- I don't believe in Safety First. Never have and never will.
