    store friends guns

We are here in Cali. My friend wants to store his guns in my house. What is involved?
Plain and simple if we were in most any state.

What should I offer him? do we need to transfer them all to my name?
Its kind of open ended if he does. He doesn't have an exit plan.
    Much obliged, Max

The gun will have to be transferred to you, through a PPT, there really isn't any other option. Yeah I know it's stupid, but it really protects you should something happen during the time they are in your possession, like a fire or burglary.

I would suggest if this is more than a couple guns, to call your local shops and make an appointment, do not use a big box store. It's a PIA for everyone involved and will take time to do, so be prepared to wait, or go back to the shop after a couple hours depending on how many are being transferred.

I'm not sure what you mean by "what should I offer him", you're doing him the favor not the other way around, he should be taking care of the PPT fees, and probably should be buying something at the shop where the transfer is done too.

If this is a request for unlimited time/volume of storage with ongoing access for his use, I would decline. The guns have to be transferred to you, meaning you have possession. Even if it for one or two guns, you will not be able to “lend” them to the owner in an unrestricted manner (while you are with him; use for hunting, etc.). He can’t just drop by, pick one up and spend the day at the range.

Not sure but have heard if your friend puts a safe in your property that you and anyone else in your household has no access to inside the safe, then it is ok. I just heard this over the grapevine so not really sure. Best to consult a lawyer that is familiar with CA laws.

Is he finally ready to commit? If you marry him, it will be legal for him to loan them to you under California law: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=PEN&sectionNum= 27880. Is he threatening self harm? Then you can also take temporary possession as a loan with a few more strict stipulations on storage, until the end of the year when this exemption phases out: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=PEN&sectionNum= 27882. Either way he needs commitment if you want to take possession of a loan without transferring ownership title in the registry through an FFL.
