If your going to buy an HK USP I think you might as well get the .40 or .45 although for a new shooter, I think there are much better/cheaper alternatives with polymer frames. HK USP has little to no after market support and finding a holster you like may prove difficult. Dont get me wrong, they are awesome pistols but I think they offer too little at their price point.

USP comes in various trigger packs. That matters more than caliber. I recommend the LEM trigger pack, in a 9mm. Make sure you are not just buying it for looks. The USP has a rather difficult to use magazine release, and is kind of an oddly designed gun. The finish is also the worst I have ever seen on a modern handgun, showing holster wear the very first time I holstered it. It was not the worst handgun I ever owned, but far from the best.

I recommend a Glock or M&P much more. Both in 9mm since it is your first gun.

The mag release is personal preference, I personally love it. I can manipulate it with my middle or index finger without shifting my grip. If I had a choice, all my handguns would have the same design.

I second that! my USP is actually the only handgun that I own that I drop the mag on with out shifting my grip.

It's worth pointing out so he takes a look at and makes sure he likes it before he buys it rather than disovering it after the fact like I many others did.

In any case...Tommy Lee Jones says it best.

On a side note, total BS that he would have a Taurus of all things. Diplomatic Service Agents are issued and required to carry Sigs. A buddy and his wife work for that agency. He's always saying he wishes he could carry a Glock instead. They are the law enforcement arm of the State Department. In addition to protecting the Diplomats and Embassy's they investigate things like passport fraud, human trafficing and so on. Pretty cool agency if you can get hired on. You'll do four years stateside, then four at an Embassy overseas, then you usually get to choose where to spend the next four, then the four after that, and so on. His wife was on Rice's protection detail during the Bush administration. Major hottie, and tough as nails.

Go for it, you will love it.

Noob here and the USP was my first gun - and love it. The larger size works for me - for me, why get a smaller gun? Given the "may" issue status of this state, I would be unlikely to ever get a CCW - thus for HD and to and from range, size isn't an issue (for me).
Would agree on the rail comment above, but according to this:
http://www.lasersightpro.com/store-p...097275194.html this line will supposed to be available later this year (don't hold your breath, or base a decision on a "mabey"
I've since gotten a PX4 that I also like, but I've been having a problem in my thumbs riding the slide release and not staying open on empty mag.....
Go for the USP, you will be happy no doubt with it.

I've been in the market for a new gun as well. I've done some research on the HK USP, love the way it feels in my hand, the Sig 2022 and the Glock 23. (I love the .40cal and I'm going to start reloading to make it more cost effective)

I'm looking for something in .40cal that I can carry and depend on. Didn't want FS but a compact for my ccw. Although I'm familiar with hammer fire, I think now I prefer a striker fired pistol but I was open to either for this purpose.

The USP, although it feels so good in my hand, has an odd magazine release that I don't know I could get used to. Every auto I've ever had has the standard push button mag release and this one is a like a flip down switch. I love the gun but that is something I don't know that I can get past. The price point is also a bit high for the value.

Also, while the SA trigger pull is a scant 4lbs, the DA trigger pull is a whopping 10lbs which would make it necessary in my mind to carry cocked and locked...something that makes me just a little uneasy (that's just me). The accuracy of a 10lb trigger pull for me would be an issue I think considering I can't make alterations to stock for the purpose of carrying. (don't know that I could anyway)

While Sig is an awesome gun maker too, the P2022 is a polymer gun while Sig is really famous for steel guns...I think, while I'm not completely sold on this, that it's the Ford Pinto of Sigs. Not bashing Sig..just saying for what I was looking for, it just didn't seem to be the best decision.

I was trying to do everything I could not to get the Glock 23 but I think for the price, reliability, the available parts and additions and the fact that it's SO easy to substitute a 9mm barrel and mag into the frame to shoot 9mm...the value there is too high to ignore for the price of the weapon. Add to the fact that I could probably get a reasonably good deal on a lightly used model here on Calguns and it becomes an even better value.

The Glock didn't feel the best in my hand but I had a Glock 20 once and it was an amazing weapon..I know that I'd get used to it in a short period of time.

That's where I'm at right now..could change. The HK is such a nice gun with such an amazing heritage that even if I got one for the collection off my permit I'd still be way happy I bought it. I don't think it would be my choice for concealed carry in my situation though and that's my primary reason for the new gun purchase.

Though I do have a soft spot in my heart for the USP9 for you "first handgun I highly recommend picking up a 22, either a buckmark or on of the flavors or rugers as those will be the most reliable.
I recommended the 22 because most people can't shoot pistols accurately & there is nothing cheaper to learn on than a 22. Also I highly suggest that if you get something with adjustable sights that you don't touch them.

Totally agree here. I spend more time shooting my .22 pistol than anything else in my safe. It's cheap and the mechanics will transfer to any other gun I shoot. Practice makes perfect and .22s will give you the most live fire practice.

I'm in SD, let me know if you want to shoot my .40's to save you some rental fee's. I have a few other handguns and your welcome to shoot them.

Oh yeah and welcome to Calguns.
MC21, I'll see Arkangel's offer and raise him. I'm up in North County. If you don't mind going to Iron Sights Indoor Range, I'll meet up with you and you can try some of my 9mms, including the USP. Bring as much factory ammo as you want to shoot. I've got tons of small bullseye targets at home. It's unlimited time at Iron Sights, so we can shoot to our heart's content, or until we can't afford anymore ammo. It's usually the latter.

I can see he you would come to this conclusion. I own two classic German Sigs in 9mm and two Glocks. And the recent 2022. To be honest, that 2022 fits my hand just awesome and never had a problem with it. The 2022 is stealth, sleek and never had a problem with it.

I think the 2022 is going to be a winner in the long run.

The mag release isn't an issue for me. The USP shot pretty nice but I have to say that the aesthetics is definitely part of the reason I am considering it. I think it is one of the better/best looking 9mm that I have seen. I had previously ruled sig out but I will take another look at the p226. The DA on the USP was pretty bad I have to agree. I automatically cocked the hammer when I shot the second time.

I was considering a .22 down the road for the significant other. 9mm was still too much for her haha. For that the sig mosquito and walther p22 has my interest but haven't actually felt or shot any .22 yet.

If I don't make a decision today, I may have to take on some of the offers here and meet up to test some guns!

My hands are small and this is the result from 8 to 9 yards with my HK USP full size 9mm. Get what you like (shoot best). It is all about personal preference.

I agree on the magazine release, but i use it so often its second nature.

Actually its an 11.5lb trigger so DA and 4.5 for SA. Which in your case is giving you more ammo against the USP

I've been practicing with my first shot as DA and it does make you try to pull the trigger, but for me i'm happy about that, it makes me focus on keeping everything tight and not get sloppy with my first shot, the follow up shots feel like cake compared to it as well.

I don't see where a person has that luxury in a self defensive posture. Good point though on the mag release. It would be an acquired taste..
