S&W auto-loaders are almost always very reliable accurate handguns.
My only quibble would be with getting the 59 series, unless you already have standard capacity mags for one, pick up one of the 39 series or one of the 45 ACP variants.
I think there was a 5906 on the private sales forum. -
S&W 59XX series automatics are well known to be reliable. They're called "tanks" for a reason. There are various "versions" of this model. Mostly it is cosmetic (sights etc). Hardparts are available from S&W but most aftermarket mfgs don't make much for them anymore.
The market is geared for plastic these days (or 1911's) and doesn't care about yesterday's firearms. The exception is holsters. Most of the holster makers carry for these firearms (may not be "in stock" however).
One thing to be aware of is the "trigger job". A lot of smith's have done a booger on the sear engagement for these pistols which causes the weapon to sometimes double fire. Usually when about at the middle of the magazine. But, like I said, hardparts are available from S&W to replace the boogered bits if you have them.Comment

I agree with the other two posters, the 5906 is a fine pistol. I have one for sale here:
I would consider shipping it if you have a FFL who can receive it and are willing to pay shipping.
Thanks,

I used to have a really nice model 59. Wished I was in a position to keep her but she had to go.Comment

I have a 5906 that I purchased almost 20 years ago, a lot of rounds through it, and it still works essentially flawlessly. I am glad I bought a lot of spare hi-cap mags when they were available!Comment

I would check CDNNinvestments flyer. Last I saw they had them cheap for lightly used ones (about $350-400 IIRC).

The 5903TSW and 5906TSW are still on the approved list ("Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale in CA").
The regular plain ol' 5906 appears not to be, from perusing DOJ database and would thus require a PPT transfer.
Both the prospective buyer and the above person offering his shipment of a 5906 to a CA FFL would have to arrange for a special form of PPT ("Gun Show Transaction") - it involves a bit extra effort on both ends, as well as FFLs on both ends - so tip your FFLs nicely

With the 10 round restriction in CA the 6906 is a bit more compact and ideal, but the difference in barrel length is about 1/2" less than the full size 5906. I have an all stainless steel 5906 with the adjustable sight that I acquired in in the early 90s, I have a few grandfathered hi-cap mags for it. There are some variations with the 5906 and I believe the 6906. One significant variety is the all stainless steel in which the big difference is a stainless steel frame versus aluminum. Aluminum is lighter, but if you shoot a lot the stainless frame will last longer. Other variations to mention will be the shape of the trigger guards and sights being of the adjustable type, low profile type fixed/drift adjustable with a punch. The front sight can be drifted for left-right corrections. The adjustable sights are not of Bomar quality, but most stock 5906 aren't competition grade accurate, they are good for 3" group at 25 yards, but they can be made to shoot accurately if you are willing to pork out the bucks. Mine is very reliable and has never jammed with quality factory loads and reloads, from fmj, flat point, wide hollow points to the 147 grain +p hollow points. I also had a 469 S&W and for some reason that pistol shot very accurately, it will do 2" sometimes lower, 5 shot groups at 25 yards. If you want a very reliable 9mm the 5906 is a very good choice, I actually acquired a 469 upper for mine and it works great for a more compact 9mm.
