Mixing Slides and Frames, possible and legal?

I've been thinking about trying to get a different frame for my Beretta 92FS Inox. I'd really like to get something with an integrated rail, like an M9A1 or 92A1 and I kind of like the two-toned look. But I'm not sure if this is 1) even possible to use all of the parts, slide, and barrel from a 92FS on one of those frames and 2) if it's even legal or possible to get just the frame, since that's generally where the serial number is and probably considered the 'core' part of the pistol.

Has anyone done anything like this, or is it more trouble than it's worth?

You can't just buy the frame unless you are exempt. You can buy two complete guns and switch the slides if you like orr buy the complete gun with the frame you like/buy the slide you're looking for.

the only part that is considered a firearm is the frame.

Mixing a frame slide on polymer guns would be OK, but I wouldn't do it on all steel guns.
Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.

Nothing illegal about swapping parts. If you have them, feel free to switch them around.

You can swap anything and everything. I think that it's only when it comes to stuff involving NFA items like sears that you have to be weary as to what you're doing.

PPT is okay though, correct? I think you can't buy just a pistol frame because just a frame isn't on the roster. But PPT is exempt from the roster, and so is intrafamilial transfer, etc.

CBruce -- I did something similar to what you are thinking about. I have had a CZ SP-01 for a long time. I kept debating back and forth whether to make it single action only. Instead of modifying it to that level, I decided to purchase a 75B SA. BUT, to defray the cost and because I didn't actually want two 9mm guns, I sold the slide off of it to another member (he wanted a full-length slide for his compact frame). Now I have two frames, one DA/SA and one SAO, and can switch the slide back and forth. I also purchased a .22 caliber conversion upper, which means I still essentially have two complete guns -- one frame is .22 and one frame is 9mm, or versa-vice

Yes, PPT is fine if your FFL is willing to... but there's still the matter of the safety demonstration. You'd have to perform it with the same model of gun (provided the shop has one available).
