Quality defensive ammo in 9mm is more than capable.

I say if you don't reload then go 9mm, go cheap on range ammo, then carry the super expensive stuff for defense (shoot it once a year and replace if with fresh stuff).

Seems like he is set on .40 S&W. And, not being a dick here, you guys are answering a question the op did not ask. Any of the Sigs in .40 would do. Go to a range rent a few and find out what she shoots best.

Ruger SR40c is striker fire with a thumb safety.
I think it is comparable to a G23 (maybe a nudge bigger in the grip length).

M&P 40c or Ruger sr40c. But id take her to the range, Let her try all the weapons available and make a decision from there. Although I guarantee she'll go m&p

PX4 Storm is cool and I think it works well with smaller hands. M&P if the grip suits her. I'd be remiss if I didn't try to suggest a CZ , so there's the P-06 (although it has a decocker instead of a safety).

She should more than briefly just try a few different calibers, and *she* should be the one to decide which caliber to get (after all, it will be her gun). The key is to try as many as she can to see which feels most comfortable in her hands. If it doesn't feel comfortable, then she won't want to use it and then it's no good.

One 9mm (or .22, or .380, etc) in the chest is better than two .40 in the bush.

The Walther PPQ comes in .40. I know several women who have really liked the feel of that gun. GREAT stock trigger too.

Well, I know you prefer a non-glock, but try the Glock23 on FOR SIZE just to see how it fits her, since you can compare against your G20. The 23 would have been my suggestion until the "no glock" requirement. I'd rent one for her anyway. Does she want a manual safety, or do YOU want HER to have a manual safety?

But bottom line, as always, is ... go to the range that rents and have her handle some from the rental rack, then rent the ones she thinks she might like.

You shouldn't choose for her. Let her choose. And give her a gun to call her own. Not one of yours she gets to use on occasion.

Like others, I think she would probably like a nice new 9mm. Let her try a 9. I'll bet she'll love it since it's better behaved than the .40 (less snappy). Even if she chooses the .40 on her own, IMHO I think she should have her own weapon.

Lastly, a conversion barrel for your G20 should only cost you $100. That's cheap enough to just go out and buy one for yourself. When a fillup costs $75, $100 shouldn't hit the pocketbook too hard.
