    Shooting the Dan Wesson DWX

Shooting the DWX after lightening the trigger, adding an ambi safety and drifting the sights

I just bought a full size DWX and get to pick it up next weekend I can't wait to shoot it. I'm thinking about taking my Staccato XL and Atlas Athena to the range with it and comparing the three.

Well I picked up the DWX Saturday morning and took it to the range directly. I got to the range and gave it some oil in a few places and loaded up the two mags that came with it (10 rounders ). Well I got sadly disappointed in the DW/CZ hybrid. It did shoot well and has a nice trigger and fit and finish are really nice BUT the most rounds I could get in a row were three before the slide locked back with rounds still in the mag. I was hoping it just needed a little shooting to straighten out but after the fourth mag and mostly only getting two rounds off each time I gave up on shooting it. The only good thing about the range trip was I did take the Atlas, Staccato and my Tanfoglio Xtreme 6".

Well I did notice that the slide lock was a little loose and moved up and down easily when I checked it at the range. I got home and then watched a few videos on disassembly and proceeded to take it apart. I will say this gun is one strange collaboration of 1911 and CZ parts. I was thinking the thumb safety/ slide lock plunger pin was not holding the slide lock to keep it from going up. Well it has the plunger spring and pin for the thumb safety but the slide lock is CZ style. It has a spring (that's what they call it) that sits in a groove in the slide lock. The "spring" was not holding the slide lock enough to keep it from working up thus locking the slide prematurely. I took a hammer and punch and gave that sucker a couple of whacks and hopefully it did the trick. The SL feels a little stiffer but shooting it will be the big test. Other than the slide lock problem the gun functioned well and shot very good. I'm hoping that once it runs the way it should it will be right up there with the Atlas and Staccato but I doubt it will get up to the Tanfoglio.

That's a bummer, hopefully you got it where it should have been from the factory. Good luck, hope it'll shoot as good as it looks.

Well I got to the range today with high hopes that my little fix took care of the problem with the DWX. After the first mag I was all smiles through 100 rounds with no problems and a enjoying a very nice shooting gun. I also took my Atlas with me and with the exception of just a little lighter trigger I'd put the DWX on the same level as the Atlas. I think because I really enjoy my CZs and shoot them well this gave the DWX a slight advantage. I will say this one is a keeper and I'm looking forward to someday picking up a DWX compact. I will also say anyone that really enjoys shooting CZs will certainly enjoy shooting the DWX.

No problem I'll tell my daughter to contact you when I can no longer shoot it lol. I am thinking about having the slide machined and the barrel ported and see how flat it will shoot.
