    coolest inheritance ever!

my grandpa died, and i inherited his smith and wesson .44 hand ejector 1st model new century. the gun is in perfect condition, and is chambered for .44 smith and wesson special. i have taken the gun apart, there is no rust, or corrosion, and it functions beautifully. will standard .44 smith and wesson special still work in this gun? can i shoot it like my great grandpa? or is it a display item now. ( see smith and wesson triple lock on wikipedia for a picture of a similar gun photo)

Yep, it's the same cartridge, based on a lengthened 44 Russian case. Originally it was rated for 15,000 PSI with a 246 grain bullet at 755 fps.

        Sorry for your loss.

If the gun is in good condition, it will handle current production 44 spl ammunition just fine.

I suppose if you have to have a grandfather die then, however inadequate, inheriting a S&W 44 triple lock is among the best possible compensations.

he has been dead for two years now, and while i miss him, i am happy because he went peacefully. i figured the revolver was nothing special until i did some digging the other day. apparently it was carried by an old family friend who worked on railroads, who then gave it to my great grandpa, who gave it to my grandpa. it has 12 original rounds, the original cleaning kit, and a large wooden case, with a velvet interior. i cant think of any better legacy to have and remember my grandpa by.

That's a cool legacy to have from your Grandfather! All I got was a bad Sicilian temper.

              enjoy your treasure!

hahahaha trust me, i wasnt excited, he was very close to me, and it took a long time to get over his death. he was one of the only people in my family to support me in my goal to be in the military, and it really broke my heart when he died. its nice to have such a great firearm to remember him by! the firearm meant alot to me already, and i love that i have such a rare firearm to commemorate the life of such a rare individual!

That is a nice piece of family history. I hope your children and grandchildren will one day appreciate a family heirloom like this. I have a few items that used to belong to my great grandfather I hope to pass to my son one day (nothing this nice though)

When my grandfather passed away, I got his first gun, this beat-up, piece of junk JC Higgins bolt-action shotgun. They were recalled by Sears a long time ago for safety concerns. Had a gunsmith check it out and he told me the firing pin was bent, the stock wad crumbling, and the action had shifted back. If I were to keep firing it, the stock would break, end there's no replacement available.

                            It's my most valued possession.

Enjoy the gun, and sorry for your loss.
