    shield plus 9mm

not really sure if i have officially joined the micro 9 craze. I don't really believe the shield plus is a micro 9mm, but Smith and Wesson sells it as one so I guess it is. after going to the range with some coworkers I decided its time to change up my carry gun. I liked the p2000SK, but it is a chunky thing and there are more convenient carry options out there that do not sacrifice ammo capacity. went with the shield plus because after messing with the p365, hellcat and shield plus, the shield felt the best in my hand. also my agency issues M&P's so I already have experience with that line of pistols. after being briefly tempted by the 30 super carry capacity, I came back to my senses and purchased the 9mm.

    what's included
you get two magazines with the shield plus, I'm a big fan of alwase including 2 magazines in the box. if you get the CA compliant one both magazines will be 10 rounders, if you get the other version they include a 10 round flush fit and 13 round extended mag. also included in the box is a useless cable lock, chamber flag, manual and a informational rubber band that makes sure you know about the flat trigger and 13 rounds.

    the gun
to me, the shield plus is more like a Glock 26 that decided to stop being a fat girl, got on a diet and slimmed down. its a thin really sub compact I wouldn't call it a micro 9, and that's probably why it felt the best to me. I feel like S&W is just calling it a micro 9 to ride that bandwagon that sig created. the one I got is optics cut and came with a nice set of high viz night sights. the shooting experience is fine. it is a bit snappy, but that's to be expected with this size of gun. the stippling has a skateboard tape like texture and despite the snap the gun does not slide around in your hand. the guy two lanes down asked what I was shooting and made a comment about it being extra loud. fun enough to shoot, but probably not a fun gun to be around. I think the CA roster version has one of the ugliest LCI's on the market, allegedly it is not visible when looking down the sights. still, if i got that version of the shield I would be finding a way to disable that. one advantage the California version has is that there is no giant white message scrawled on the slide about how the gun can be fired without a magazine. if it weren't for that LCI the California slide would be way cleaner then the regular shield plus.

    the magazines
10,13,15 rounders available. one thing I noticed is that the larger capacity mags are not base plate extensions the bodies are larger and built to hold either 13 or 15 rounds. my factory Glock 26 and LCP max 12 round mags are just 10 round bodies with a extended baseplate. the mags require break-in and loading the last round requires the use of a loading tool. a loading tool is not included so I got one that came with a Glock to work. even though the mags are stiff they did not cause any malfunctions while at the range. I was able to chamber a round then insert a fully loaded 13 rounder on the closed slide and empty the gun without experiencing a malfunction. extra mags cost $30 to $36 so they are not clock cheap, but they are not Sig expensive either.

    random thing I like
the shield plus is not unnecessarily ambidextrous. before the "optics cut", every gun had to have ambi controls. oh how the guntubers would b**ch and moan in there videos when they were handling a pistol that did not feature fully ambidextrous everything. where's the ambi, this should be ambi, what if I need to charge my weapon but my dominant arm is injured all guns must be ambi bla bla blaa. gun manufactures catered to to this BS and started cludging on ambidextrous controls that take up space.

    conclusion
shield plus is a awesome little gun, if you are looking for a new gun I highly recommend it, just not sure I would call it a micro 9

    everything in the box

    the three factory magazines available

factory night sights don't require an upgrade

"also included in the box is a useless cable lock"

I would't say useless. I used one to lock our helmets to the bike upon dismounting. I bought the Shield 9, and two extra 8 round mags. I carries well in my DeSantis IWB holster.

Likes, reliable, feeds my duty ammo, Federal HST 147 grain, and what ever practice 9 I get. Accurate enough for what it is, fits my hand well, controls easy to reach, and manipulate, decent sights.

Neutral, thumb safety. One of my other carry guns is a 1911, so I'm used to having it there, and using it. Snappy recoil, yes. Im not that recoil sensitive. Another carry gun is my S&W 340PD. When practicing with that I'll throw in a few 357 rounds for the "fun factor".

Dislikes, magazine disconnect, round capacity, and the magazine will pinch skin when reloading, if you have a tight grip on the pistol. LCI, take it or leave it.

I just picked up my shield plus on monday. Have yet to take it to the range. But I have been carrying a sheild 1.0 for a little over a year now in a Tenicor Velo 4. Carries much better than my G26. Once it is time to renew my permit, i'll ditch the 1.0 for the plus. Congrats on your new pistol!

Oh and when shooting, I dont notice the LCI flag, but APEX makes a delete for it.

I've carried an off roster Shield Plus PC for about a year and a half. Great pistol but it is almost too thin in my hand, requiring me to draw from cover, then adjust how it is fitting into my palm and grip before I can acquire a good sight picture, which I don't like.

I've determined for range shooting, its fine because I'm not up against a time constraint, but for carrying, drilling, practicing, I am planning on moving to a G19 as my primary, the Plus PC will become a secondary. Yes, G19 is thicker and bulkier but man is it easier to draw from concealment and be ready to shoot with the correct grip. I also occasionally carry my G17 and I shoot that gun much better than my micros so I figure the G19 is a smaller, easier to carry version of the G17.

Micro 9s, IMHO, are simply too small and thin for many hands. I have average sized hands with long, thin fingers and my micros, all of them, have the same issue, I also have the Ruger Max 9 and my Shield 1.0. I've shot the Hellcat and the P365, they are even worse because the grips are so tiny. It's not that I can't shoot them from cover, its that delay between drawing and being able to shoot that bugs the hell out of me. I practiced and trained with all of the Micros and I cannot seem to extract them from the holster and into my palm/grip without having to readjust the seating of the gun in my palm to have a good, solid grip. I may also check out the M&P 2.0 compact since I like Smith.

Congrats on a great choice! I bought a Shield 1.0 when they first came out. Then picked up an optics ready slide on sale. Now I have the Plus and use the same optics slide...no ugly LCI. Also running the Apex carry trigger in mine. After my experience with my first Shield the choice to go to the Shield Plus was very easy.

I'm really curious --- I had the first gen of the Shield in 9mm. I have slim hands but large hands, but whenever I would shoot that Shield, the very thin top part of the backstrap would actually hurt the web of my hand between thumb and forefinger. I tried sleeves and other methods, but none worked well, so I sold that Shield.
Does anyone else have that issue?

I ultimately moved over to the G26 since the fatter grip spread the recoil impulse better in my hand and I can shoot the G26 comfortably all day...
(I also got the Pearce mag extensions to get my pinkie finger on the grip and they work great for improved control.)

I carried a shield plus for about a year. I also had a shield plus PC 4". The 4" is a weird gun, but it was a very nice shooter. Both were 100% reliable with no failures at all over thousands of rounds. I stripped and reassembled the entire gun a few times, and everything inside is durable and well made. Its a quality gun.

I'm in the minority that thinks the shield plus is too big and too heavy. The 365 is not inconsequentially smaller and its a few oz lighter, and holds the same capacity and honestly shoots about the same. I carry a max9 now and definitely dont recommend it, but size wise its also much smaller with the same capacity. My hands aren't huge, so the grip is fine on any micro. Well, fine enough for 200-300 rounds at the range.
