The E2 versions are no longer in production...it was a limited run.
The good news is that they are adding the E2 style grip their regular 229 and not changing the model number...so it should retain its roster position. They have also changed the contour of the slide on the 229 to mimic the old folded slide models...again just a running change.
Sorry but there has always been two sized frames for the 229 until the introduction of the E2 model...try sticking a .40 magazine in a 9mm 229 to prove it to yourself
The .40 and 357Sig models used one frame and the 9mm models used another...the 9mm 229 was really just a 228 with a stainless slide (the top contour of the slide is also different from the .40 slide) The magazines wells are different sizes and .40/357 mags won't fit. That is why when you go to a site like Top Shot and look for magazines, they differentiate between the older 9mm 229 mags and the newer ones...the new ones won't fit in the older 9mm 229s
