FTF when loading my 1911

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you ever experienced this on your Kimber or 1911. I'm using the KimPro Tac 8 round mags on my Kimber Custom CDP II. Works fine with regular bullets but if I load if full with 8 rounds of Winchester white box personal defense hollow point rounds the first round seems to get caught on the feed ramp when I pull the slide. But if I take one round out leaving 7 in the mag it cycles fine...Thoughts?

Also the dang HP left marks on the feed ramp. Anyway to clean it up or get it polished?

Sounds like it is your magazine. Take a look at the trippresearch.com. It explains how some mags can change the direction of the 8th round.

Don't mess with the feed ramp until you try other mags such as Wilson and Tripp.
Does it get caught if you press the slide release?

I am using chip McCormick magazines with my TLE. I never had any problem loading SWC and HP's. I would suggest replace magazine. Most likely 8th round loaded changes angle of first round. Could you post OAL for this round?
My loads OAL have 1.220 inch Zero Bullets 185 JHP. They feed flawlessly.
Also I have Federal Hydro shock 185 JHP for protection with OAL 1.18 which looks kind of short to me. But they chamber well on the dry run.
Polishing, I think will not fix this problem. I did polish manually (not tools!!!)with Flitz Polish just a little to remove the marks.
I also have original Kimber magazine which I am using on a range from time to time without any problem.
Did you try to reverse a spring in magazine? (Rotate 180 degrees from back (not bottom) to front)

Update: Yes Federal rounds in my TLE are too short. New one should be around 1.210. Probalby from dry runs. Need to retire them.

SIlly question, but are you riding the slide or just "slingshotting" it when you load that first round? +1 on the slide release question.

Mags need to break in too, though it really should chamber when slingshotting or releasing the slide.

Yes - use 7 round mags like JMB intended.

What's OAL mean?

Anything else I can use to clean up the marks up a bit?

The first time I "slingshot" it and it got stuck. Then I let it "ride", that's when I noticed it was getting stuck. Once I took out the 1st round out of the 8 and cycled the slide the other 7 loaded/ejected fine. With 8 CCI/Blazer brass all 8 cycled fine. It seems to be getting caught on the hollow point tip on the first round of the full 8 round mag.

OAL Overall length.
Leave marks alone. Copper will not affect steel too much
Forget about reversing the spring. It might help with last round not first one

I have used maroon (medium grit) and grey (fine grit) scotchbrite on my Kimber Pro Carry II with aluminum frame with good results.

I use Wilson Combat mags exclusively (except for the factory Kimber mag that I use to 'top off' during matches) and only had self-induced failures. I highly recommend them.

As far as self defense rounds are concerned, I've only shot CorBon 230gr +P's and they feed fine. I'm not sure how they compare to the Winchester ammo from a bullet profile point-of -view.

Also, your gun looks pretty new and this problem may be attributed to not being fully broken in. Give it a couple hundred rounds or so of regular ball ammo first before trying the hollow points again. Don't forget to really lube the rails too!

I don't have anything to measure the OAL except for a ruler and tape measure.

Looking at Kimbers site it lists the CDP frames aluminum.

Thanks, yes it's new, only 100 rounds through it. I'll use regular ball for several hundred more rounds...

You can buy a small ruler (scale) from Home Depot that has 1/10th inch graduations and that'll get you close. Better yet, buy the cheap vernier calipers and that'll get you to +/- .001"

Hell, I'm visually challenged so I bought one with a dial. If you really splurge they got 'em with digital displays (last I checked, on sale at Midway for $25-$30 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...242&t=11082005).
