    1911 Compensator?

I'll probably get some boos, but anyone use a compensator for the 1911? If so, thoughts? Recommendations? For .45 and 9mm.

It feels like maybe comps on handguns are making a revival. First red dots, now comps, at least from my perspective.

No boos here. I have a compensated 9mm 1911 and it's very enjoyable to shoot. Less muzzle flip. Only thing is I don't know if a drop in product exists. The comp might have to be part of a custom build by a gunsmith. Also, if you're willing to spend the money, I think the Nighthawk Firehawk is pretty cool. Nighthawk does have a process to be able to get one in CA

Threaded barrels being a restricted feature on semi-auto pistols that do not have a fixed magazine is the main hinderance and lack of interest in pistol compensators in CA.

In order to be CA legal, the semi-auto pistol will need to have a fixed magazine or the compensator will need to be permanently attached (pin & weld) to the threaded barrel or the compensator needs to attach in a manner that it does not utilize a threaded/lugged barrel.

A permanently attached compensator often results in the barrel no longer be removable from the pistol's slide.
^This can affect how a person services/maintains that pistol.

For range usage. No other reason. Just wanted to maybe use it so others that are more sensitive can enjoy it as well.

It would be a barrel bushing replacement, not threaded. Like from Wilson Combat or the other manufacturers that use barrel bushing comps.

Not generally an issue for 1911/2011 because the barrel comes out the front of the slide. But definitly a no go in other designs. As for a compensated gun, they're fine. Not nearly as bad as porting when it comes to up close shooting (e.g. from retention). It's not a necessity but if you understand the pros and cons it's has it's good points.

Bushing comps are basically just for show.
They don't actually help with recoil or muzzle rise at all because the bore is so big that it will not strip the excess gas away that a proper comp does with an exit hole less than 1mm over bullet diameter.
The bushing comp HAS to be large because the barrel has to be able to slide through it.

If you want a comp that actually works, get a Schuemann barrel and have the slide cut to fit it.

                  Dan,

I've got an older EGW Bushing 3 port Compensator (.45ACP) sitting in a parts bin.
While I do tend to agree with ar15barrels on their efficiency you are welcome to give it a try and see if it works for you.
                  Let me know.

                  Regards,
                  Mike
