    Moving to CA

Like the thread title says I'll be moving to the LA area pretty soon. Just wanted some clarification on some of California's finer gun laws just to make sure I'm staying legal. I currently owe a HK USP Tactical with the threaded barrel. If I keep the gun disassembled with the barrel stored separately from the gun, would it be legal for me to bring the USP with me? I figure later on down the road I could always pick up a non-threaded barrel or since I'll only be in CA for a couple years I'll just leave the gun disassembled the entire time and pick up a 1911.

Yes, it would be legal without the barrel attached.

However, I would recommend installing a non-threaded barrel. Just in case you run into an over zealous LEO/DA and they want to prosecute you for having a "broken" assault weapon.

Also, within 60 days of establishing residence in CA, you will need to register any handguns you bring to CA.
Registration is accomplished by sending in a complete New Resident Handgun Ownership Report with applicable fees to CA DOJ BOF.

Thank you for your helpful reply and the link to the file.

Should I put down the model as USP Tactical or just USP since if it ever does get re-assembled it'll only be a USP and no longer a tactical?

Keep it simple. The important thing is the serial number.

Put down however it is marked on the firearm.

Welcome to California and just keep in mind that California is the "no fun" state for guns.

Well, welcome to California. And let me apologize in advance for the gun laws, and all the other laws that make no sense here.

I'd recommend reconsidering the move! I've spent the past year researching Kalifornia's gun laws, and I think I might be more confused now than when I started. Just assume that whatever you're doing is in some way, shape or form illegal, and you'll probably be right.

Haha thanks for the welcome guys. Unfortunately not moving is not an option as I'm looking at applying to the UC schools. They have some of the finest programs for the master's degree I want. In all likelihood all my toys will get disassembled, thrown into a giant Stormcase I have lying around here and remain in there locked up for however long I end up in CA.

I'm also thinking about hitting up HK to see if I can get a non-threaded barrel for cheaper than an aftermarket one so all I'd have to buy are mags. I'll probably pick up a shotgun of some sort down in CA as actual home defense so in case it ever gets used I won't have to explain what an HK USP-T or an AR-15 is in court.

Shotguns are legal down there... right?
