Brownells sells frames. Just have to find a FFL to go through. This is the route I am going to try.

Brownell's won't work. You cannot buy frames as new guns via CA FFL, except via PPT.

Frames are not certified for new sale nor drop tested (even if that particular frame's make/model were on the Roster).

You'd have to buy a frame from someone in CA that has one for PPT/consignment sale.

If you REALLY REALLY wanted a frame and wanted to spend a $$ extra, find a Pachmayr Dominator or Springfield SASS single-shot upper for 1911 frame, send it to the seller of your 1911 frame, then he can ship this complete, assembled Roster-exempt single-shot handgun to the FFL of your choice where it can be DROSed to you.

After all this grief, you're probably best off buying a base model Springfield Armory 1911 and just rebuilding the hell outta it and selling off the unused parts.

Okay, I'll bite. I have a Pachmayr Dominator "upper" in .308 that's useless without a frame.

What's a good solid-but-cheap frame that will hold up to .308 pounding?

A fellow Calgunner suggested I go to a gun show and pick up a frame for cheap, but I wouldn't know what to get and am a stay-at-home kind of guy anyway. What's a good solid-but-cheap frame that will hold up to .308 pounding?
I think any steel frame would work. I might have doubts (dunno) about alloy frames - but then my AR10 in 308 has a forged alloy upper/lower and I don't see that wearing out anytime soon

And, since you have a Dominator single-shot upper, you could acquire that frame from anyone on Gunbroker, etc - as long as the frame had all the parts stuffed in it (i.e, working trigger, etc.) and you mailed the Dominator upper to the seller for affixing to that 1911 frame. It would then be sent back to your CA FFL for sale to you as an 12133PC-exempt single-shot handgun (providing the bbl was min 6" long and overall length was 10.5" when measured parallel to the bore). Thus, just ensure the 1911 frame enters CA assembled into an exempt single-shot and that it is DROSed to you as an exempt single-shot.

I have a Springfield SASS inbound and will be "assisting" in transfers of single-shot 1911's as well.

                  STI's make great single shots.
They are even nicer if you put a regular slide on them after you clear the DROS/waiting period.

I have no idea about specifics of certain models.

I do suspect the answer is "yes", though.

If the STI 2011 frame works/is interchangeable with other brands' slide/bbl assemblies then it would work with these special single-shot rifle-caliber uppers (Dominator and SASS).

Some of the STIs are cut to have wide slides (also made by STI) and might not work.

I'm quite certain that I could make the SASS upper fit/work on any frame.
If modifications are in order, then modifications will be done.
I have friends with STI frames already so I'll make sure it fits them before I go sending it out to be installed on a frame.
