I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. Come January 2010 you can't buy a pistol unless it has micro stamping. How will this affect currently owned pistols, PPTs and giving them to my children??

Micro Stamping.

I believe that the micro-stamping feature will only apply to the new sales of new pistols at that time. Anything that you have prior will be OK. Passing firearms that you've owned that does not have microstamping to your children should be OK .
see this link: http://calguns.net/calgunforum/showt...=microstamping.......interesting read.Last edited by bigkahuna04; 01-03-2008, 10:48 AM.NRA Life Member

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles." It will not affect what you own or can PPT.
Also, because of the way the bill has been written, microstamping may not come into fruition at all even in 2010 or decades later, due to patent restrictions, regulatory implementation matters, etc.
So don't lose much sleep over this. Don't panic and go out and buy a bunch of guns - relax, buy the guns you want when you want.

I do find it refreshing that our FFL's are nakedly self interested on this board

Yes, but not without patent encumbrances which are not allowed in the statute.

Microstamping will also only apply to NEW models of guns being introduced to the market place.
Current approved handguns will not be affected as they are grandfathered.
Just don't expect to ever see a new model of handgun introduced in California once the law takes effect.Comment

Why? Poor analysis.
The mag discos and LCIs are easy to design in and don't depend on weird costly equipement, and all the major vendors have this stuff either in their guns or on the drawing boards since these are often requirements for departmental purchases anyway. And they're readily/cheaply removable.
Microstamping depends on expensive proprietary equipment and can lead to your accidental identification as a criminal if spent brass near a crime scene is found. Defeating microstamping requires a new barrel/firing pin and/or slide assembly.

Microstamping Patent
Take a look at the micro-stamping patent:
It seems overly broad so that it would cover any form of imprinting. The irony is that the broader the patent, the more likely the technology is disqualified by the statute - unless the DOJ-BOF reinterprets the following phrase.
If you don't have a license from Identification Dynamics LLC to use imprint technology, you are not "unencumbered by any patent restrictions."provided that the Department of Justice certifies that the technology used to create the imprint is available to more than one manufacturer unencumbered by any patent restrictions.
Any patent attorneys care to chime ?Comment
