    After Market Sights for 1911

I've decided to replace the simple black factory front sights on my Springfield 1911. I would really appreciate to hear from those who has done this already. I heard there's special tools involved. I also know there's a variaty of after market sights to choose from.

Bottom line, I want brighter front sights to replace the plain black ones that came with it. Thank you for your feedback.

What model do you have? I have been researching to do the same thing on my mil spec SA 1911. I really want a nice set of Novak tritium night sights but that would require milling the slide for them because the factory sights have a "tenon" based front sight and Im not sure it is even possible. I guess I am looking for some similar info so I hope some friendly calgunners respond....

10-8... plain black rear, front brass bead. The brass stands out in front of all the blackness.

I have the SA 1911 A1 9mm Loaded... I'm wondering if there are any fiber optic type sight that will fit. I also heard you need a special tool to mount it.

Thanks NewbieDave, I'll look into to the Brass bead. and websites you and recommend? or better yet, pictures?

You can run fiber if you want. Dawson is just 1 company that offers them.

At the minimum you would something to push the old sight out (sight pusher, or punches) and then maybe some files to file down the sight to ensure a snug fit into the slide. And then you'll need to re-sight the gun.

Sprinfields are small tenon. Any compentant 'smith will have a 1911 fron sight staking tool. Takes about 3 minutes.

Fiber optics are great outdoors and in daylight, its like having a road flare for a front sight. They are less bright indoors and in low light. I prefer the 10-8 performance FO sight myself, unfortunately they do not make their front sight in a version which fits the Springfield dovetail. Dawson Precision is among the most popular FO sights on he market, and they do make them for the Springfield 1911.

I have two Springfield Loaded 1911s that I have put fiber optic front sites on made by EGW.

Very nice. now those are pretty. I was debating with fiber optics, only because of its durability concerns. But after seeing them on your babies, I'm going with fiber optics.

And thanks to everyone for the advice. can't stop thinking about changing the sights...
