first time at range failure of a sr9c:(

hey all me and the wife took the p99 and sr9c out for the first time. both new and unfired by us. we used federal champion 9mm 115gr, 250 rounds each. p99 was flawless. no errors i just cant aim to save my life lol. but i had fun. the ruger on the other hang had error after error. every other bullet or so had fte, we had ftf, failure to return to breach you name it. my wife was so pissed she put it down for 20 mins to shoot my p99. no issues when she shot the p99 but i didnt shoot the ruger. she has shot before so i dont think its her. sending it back to ruger today so we will let them deal with it. very dissapointed but hey it happens with things so lets let them do what they do....

holy run on sentence. anyone else have any ruger sr9c stories to share so i can get a feel for if we want to keep this thing? thanks.

My SR9c never failed me, it swallows any brand ammo I feed her, I installed a Crimson Trace Laser and gave it to my wife, she have been very happy shooting it! here is the picture of the gun.

One issue about Rugers is that they really do REQUIRE a good initial cleaning in order to be certain that all the packing grease is removed. My wife's SR9c had similar issues (although not as bad) because of this. After cleaning/lubing ... FLAWLESS.

So you didn't shoot it? I have an XDM 45 comp that works every time with any ammo, but for some reason when my gf shoots it, it jams like crazy. It only happens to her with this gun too.

i have an sr9c and have easily put 500 rounds through it. all types of ammo. never failed me once...

I had a SR9 back when it very first came out and I didn't have any issues with it... Did you take it apart and clean the slide and lube it all back up? The grease they put in it (gunk) gums them up pretty bad... and it really just depends on gun... You can buy 10 of them and maybe 1 or 2 of them would have this... the other 8 you can take outta the box and fire away... clean lube and try again

Tap Rack Bang is all you need to do if it jams ...No need to call for emergency...Whenever i shoot a gun and if it jams, failure to feed, stove pipe you name it...

I had something weird happen to my glock 19 yesterday at the range it was I think a failure to eject the slide was 1/4 inch from returning to battery.

Just did a quick tap, rack, and bang and carried on.

Then luckily I had a snap cap with me and had my gf load them in for malfunction drills after.

Just got done with a holster class in Chabot yesterday with the SR9C. It has gone for more than 2k rounds of live fire through it with as much if not more dry fires at home. In it's entire life, the only failures were during its break in period where 7-10 RWS cartriges didn't fire the first time due to light primer strikes and 4-5 of those rounds never fired at all (even though theres a HUGE hole in the primer). I've since then recycled those bad rounds with good ammo to suprise unsuspecting friends to force them to do tap rack drills. But other than those handfull of rounds, the SR9c has been really good to me.

I never shot it only my p99. I did clean it using hoppes 9 and elite cleaner to get where i couldnt. Lubed using hoppes elite and a q tip. It will be at ruger tomorrow and they said turn around is 3 weeks. Great customer service so we will see what happens from here.

my wife has had a couple double feeds / stovepipes. I think she limp wrist's sometimes. My daughter has shot the gun quite a bit, and never had a problem..I've never been able to replicate it either.

You have to verify that it's not the mag, the shooter, or the ammo before you send it back to the mfg. Well, I guess you don't have to but female shooters have way more grip-related malfunctions than men.

Some VERY COMMON possibilities.

1. Could just need a cleaning.

2. It is VERY common for gun to just not like ammo completely randomly. Try several different brands and types of ammo. See if one of them solves the issue. I've had guns that were the exact same make and model where one loved a certain type of ammo and the other absolutely hated it. Very, very common problem.

3. Compact guns often are less forgiving to the shooter limpwristing it and doing improper technique. In fact, they encourage fatigue which leads to limpwristing. This is because they are small which means they are hard to hold properly as well as lightweight which meant they have a very snappy recoil that does not get absorbed by the mass of the gun.

4. If it is brand new, the magazines might be too stiff. If you are topping them off (loading until they are full) that makes the problem worse. Download them by 2 or even 3 rounds each and when loading them make sure they are fully seated. Super stiff magazines topped off often fail to seat all the way. They get in there good enough not to fall out, but not good enough to properly feed rounds. Leading to various kinds of malfunctions.

Only after you have eliminated the human error eliment, bad ammo eliment, or too full/stiff magazine eliment do you want to blame the gun and send it in for repair. Why? Because it is almost never the gun...and if it is the gun it will be expensive to fix. Much more expensive than swapping out ammo, cleaning the gun, downloading magazines, or improving your grip and fundamentals.

Not a week goes by that I don't read this complaint about a gun. It almost always gets solved with the above steps.
