    S&W vs RUGER 22 / Witch one ?

Looking at getting a 22 for fun and would like to get your imput on the pros and cons of each these guns.

I really like the S&W 22A SKU# 107437 styling and compared to the Ruger 22/45 is just more appealing to me.but not set in stone.

Would resale be about the same as cost is only abot $10 different.

    Thanks

My personal preference is the Ruger Mark III but it is a few extra bucks. The 22/45 is a fine firearm. I have not fired the S&W so no comment there. The Mark III is all-metal, very accurate, and almost never jams (neither of mine has *ever* jammed.) The 22/45 is pretty much the same gun with a slightly different grip angle (designed to emulate the 1911-style .45 pistol) and a polymer lower. The polymer lower and the different grip angle give the 22/45 a significantly different "feel" than the Mark III. Sorry I cannot comment on the S&W but I have never even handled one.

As long as you are looking at 22 pistols you might check out the Ruger SR22P. Those are really cool little pistols.

I went looking a couple of months ago for a .22. I looked at the two that you listed and bought a Browning Buckmark. The S&W felt cheaply made and the slide felt 'gritty' when moving. The Ruger was better made but dis-assembly is said to be a PITA and nothing on it felt smooth. I wanted to like the Ruger but I just didn't like the way it felt in my hand.

The Browning is also a PITA to disassemble but it was smooth out of the box, has a green-colored fiber front sight and shoots very nicely. Of the four that I handled the Browning also felt best in my hand.

      Good luck

ruger semi 22s are famously well known for reliability and accuracy id say them and brownings are the benchmark gold stars for 22 semi auto handguns sw is a fine company and id imagine you would be happy with that as well I own rugers and smiths, rifles, semi autos and revolvers and I'm never selling any of them. Get which one you like best

i like the mark 2 but the mark 3 seems to have too much going on inside for ease of matinence

The Ruger Mark III or 22/45 are a pain to reassemble the first few times. Once you get the hang of it, which is not at all difficult, no sweat. In fact the Rugers are actually simpler to disassemble and clean than most pistols.

All the choices mentioned in this thread are good ones. Do not let the assembly issue concern you overly.

If your new to guns, i would lean towards ruger SR22p. it is easy to takedown and clean. very relaible and accurate from my personal experience. it is styled more like the average slide action semi auto.

If your more into tinkering with your guns, making them better than the factory, i would go with the 22/45 or the regualr mkIII. these pistols are a PAIN to take apart the first couple times... after the gun loosens up it gets easier though. once youve done it a few times, its not as complicated as some people make it out to be. the main thing with the 22/45 is that you can so many after market parts for it. mine has some VQ parts and the trigger is crazy nice. gotta be like 2-3lbs pull and a crisp reset. trigger is all adjusted to have no play at all too minimal pre travel and overtravel.

SO, simple plinking fun with low maintenance and cool look: SR22

Reliable, heavy, barely any recoil, many aftermakret upgrades: 22/45
                I like guns.

                  Hello Backtoshooting,

I have fired both, and must say that I enjoy the 22/45 better. The mag release on the s&w 22a is actually in the grip, whereas the mag release on the 22/45 is located where most mag releases are. In terms of ease of disassembly, both of them seemed different, but not difficult. Also, the ruger fit better in my hand as the 22a felt blocky and odd for my hands. I was actually more inaccurate with the 22a as opposed to other tongues pistols.
